You have to be a really special quarterback to start the first game of your rookie season. You’re talking about making a franchise so confident in your abilities, that they’re willing to immediately turn over the reins to a professionally untested arm. That takes a lot of trust in a industry where you’re one or two losses from getting canned. In fact, the list of other quarterbacks who have started their first games is EXTREMELY exclusive, and headlined by Peyton Manning. Last season guys like Robert Griffin III, Russell Wilson, and Andrew Luck each stepped in to that spotlight and led their teams to the playoffs. Today, the New York Jets added another name that they believe will get them similar results. Yes, the New York Jets are starting Geno Smith at quarterback Sunday.
