It’s the third week of the NFL preseason, which is usually the week when teams put their best foot forward in the dress rehearsals. Coaches often play their starters well into the third quarter, and players ramp up the intensity now that roster cuts are around the corner.
Here are some important storylines to keep an eye on as the regular season quickly approaches.
Can the Bears Defense Perk Up?
The Bears hired head coach Marc Trestman in hopes that he’d be able to keep the team’s elite defense intact while boosting the offense. Last season, the Bears allowed the third-fewest points per game in the NFL, but there have been some disconcerting sights through two preseason games. The Bears have given up a whopping 52 points through two games, and their offense hasn’t looked great, either. They averaged 2.5 yards per passing play in their last preseason game, so they’ll be hoping for better results in Week 3. Bovada has them listed as a 3.5-point favorite in Oakland on Friday night.

Mark Sanchez entered Saturday nights preseason game in the fourth quarter and was sacked three times before exiting with a shoulder injury.
Sanchez had been competing with Geno Smith for the starting quarterback job of the Jets.
Mark Sanchez had XRays. He will also be undergoing a MRI, I'm told. #nyj

Smith may be named the quarterback...
New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith will hope to forget about his first NFL start after a horrendous performance Saturday night against the New York Giants.
Geno Smith struggled in his first start with three interceptions and a safety.
Smith, who was battling an ankle injury since week one of the preseason, was named the starter against the Giants for the Jets third preseason game...
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Adrian Peterson must be itching for more work.
The Minnesota Vikings MVP running back hasn't played in a game in the preseason and is expected to get his first game action this Sunday when Minnesota travels to San Francisco for the third preseason game. He'll get more time Sunday, but probably not a lot of it.
"We've discussed that with Adrian...
BUTT OF JOKES
Here’s a picture that a New York Jets fan posted on Reddit of another Jets fan at the game preseason game between the Jets and Giants wearing a Mark Sanchez jersey that’s been modified to read “Butt Fumble”:
For those of you who do not know, or may not remember, the great event known as “The Butt Fumble” took place last Thanksgiving when the Jets hosted the Patriots...
Just when it looked like Mark Sanchez had the Jets’ quarterback competition wrapped up, he may have been dealt a bad break, handing the job back to Geno Smith.
Mark Sanchez exited the Jets’ game against the New York Giants after being hit by defensive tackle Marvin Austin with an apparent throwing-shoulder injury. Sanchez played very little, with the Jets instead taking an...
After much deliberation, the New York Jets finally announced that rookie quarterback Geno Smith will start tomorrow’s preseason game against the New York Giants. Smith was apparently slated to start the team’s 2nd preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars but those plans were thrown by the wayside after Smith injured his ankle against the Detroit Lions.
As usual, no one...
Usually preseason games don’t have a lot riding on them, but this is not the case for the New York Jets. With Mark Sanchez taking the backseat to Geno Smith this week, offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg is calling on the rookie to “turn it loose.”
It didn’t look good.
The Jets are having all type of problems with their quarterbacks.
Rex Ryan’s plan to start Geno Smith at the quarterback position didn’t go exactly the way he thought it would. Smith still needs time in the NFL to figure out where not to put the football. Smith threw 3 interceptions and he could have done worse. Smith completed 16 of the 30 passes he threw and it shows that Ryan and his offensive coordinators over exposed the young quarterback...
The New York Jets entered Saturday night’s preseason game against the New York Giants with a big question mark surrounding the quarterback position.
They left it with far worse.
In addition to a less-than-impressive three-interception effort from rookie Geno Smith fifth-year veteran Mark Sanchez left the game with a right shoulder injury after being inexplicably inserted into...
Jets coach Rex Ryan has made it official: there's still a legitimate quarterback competition on his team.
It was reported Wednesday that Smith who watched Mark Sanchez start the team's first two preseason games would have his opportunity to start Saturday vs. the Giants.
Ryan confirmed that to reporters Thursday saying “I think he's looked good. I'm excited to...
N.Y. Jets coach Rex Ryan needs to be fired.
No really, fired. This is not reaction trolling. I'd actually really fire him before Week 1 if I were Jets general manager John Idzik.
Playing veteran quarterback Mark Sanchez in Saturday's fourth quarter, behind a second-string offensive line, after their only other viable option, Geno Smith, had absolutely proven himself not...
BY NICK ST. DENISAfter Geno Smith spent last Wednesday throwing four interceptions while hobbling on his injured foot, New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said the rookie quarterback had his "worst day," which was "brutal."This Wednesday, Ryan sang a different tune."It wasn’t brutal, that’s for sure," Ryan quipped. "That was a great day. I don’t...
