PLAYERS: Kayvon Webster
TEAMS: Denver Broncos
The Broncos selected corner back Kayvon Webster from South Florida in the 28th, third round spot (90 overall). Nightmares of the last game the Broncos played make it clear the Broncos need some backfield power and Webster has definite potential for that power. The main reason is the rookie is fast. In the draft combine Webster performed a 4.41 second 40-yard dash, being one of the “fastest cornerbacks in the draft” according to coach John Fox. His senior year at South Florida he had 82 tackles, two sacks, six pass breakups as well as three forced fumbles.  Not only that but using his experience as a linebacker in high school he has a very “physical nature” he says. He became an all-big east conference selection by being the only cornerback to lead his team in tackles. Kayvon Webster at Rookie Camp (Photo Credit: Denver Broncos) Defense is an area that the Denver Broncos really excelled at last year. They were the top spot next to the Pittsburgh Steelers, a spot a lot of teams would love to be at, however the Broncos would prefer first. “Last year was good but it wasn’t great and we’re looking for that great season and to finish off with a championship,” Peyton Manning said when the Broncos returned to workouts back in April. The next step to that championship season is a top ranked defense. With changes to the defense such as Elvis Dumervil leaving, additions like Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Louis Vasquez and Terrance Knighton there is a lot to be said about what our defense will look like next year. With regards to Webster it leaves the question where will he fit in. The defensive backs are stacked; there is a lot of competition: Bailey, Rodgers-Cromartie, Chris Harris, Rahim Moore, Mike Adams, David Bruton, Quentin Jammer, Quinton Carter, Tony Carter, Omar Bolden and of course Webster are all options in the back field. It will be interesting to see who breaks through this season. Webster is comfortable doing whatever is best for the team and is determined to be the best at that position. “I’m approaching it as a person that’s just trying to contribute to the team whether that’s on special teams or a cornerback.” Webster will need a lot of improvement specifically with his coverage. He will more than likely start out on special teams but has a lot of potential for a great cornerback especially with teachers like Bailey (Websters favorite NFL corner) and Rodgers-Cromartie.
