Quite a weekend indeed; Bin Laden is finally dead, there was near perfect weather in NYC and for those of you that have your priorities straight, it was the NFL Draft. With one of the best GM's in the league capable of finding talent within the draft, he had his work cut out for him this year. There were (and still are) holes throughout the Giants roster, what would JR do to try and patch these areas? Would he come through yet again, or bust his nut in the first round? Well, below for your pleasure, is a round-by-round recap of what your favorite front office did during this year's draft and some analysis by a fan that's had one to many beers during happy hour.
ROUND 1- Prince Amukamara(CB) - Watch Highlight Reel HERE
It's almost impossible to have the name Prince and be ****** i.e. Prince William, Prince Nasseem, Prince Albert and Prince Akeem Joffer to name a few. Prince Amukamara from Nebraska is no different. The Giants swear that he was the best player available which is probably true and JR stuck to his guns picking value over need, with so many positions that need attention this was an interesting choice to start things off. Most likely he'll be a starter because Aaron Ross is constantly hurt and the Giants were forced to play a lot of 3 safety packages last year as a result. He won't be as good as Corey Webster his first year but could be better then Terrell Thomas, word on the street is that he has trouble turning in coverage and has short arms for someone his height. He was projected to go a lot higher so you can't fault the Giants for picking him up. With the state of the offensive line though, this pick could come back to haunt the G-Men.
ROUND 2- Marvin Austin(DT) - Watch Highlight Reel HERE
"We came to work with basically the same objectives -- to take the best player available," head coach Tom Coughlin said. Well thanks for clearing that up you old bastard. Because the last time I checked we had the best D-Line in the ******* NFL. But obviously that means we are losing someone, Cofield? Cofield's fat ass is gonna want a **** ton of money and Kiwanuka is coming back from an injury that is pretty critical for a normal person. Only time will tell if Kiwi can overcome his injury and free agency will dictate what will happen with Cofield and the rest of our gaps. As far as Austin goes; the kid is a beast but he probably hasn't been in football shape for some time. It's one thing to take bribes and to cheat on tests, if your a fat out of shape pig, that's where I draw the line. Coughlin isn't going to stand for any of that ****.
ROUND 3- Jerrel Jernigan (WR) - Watch Highlight Reel HERE
This pick was great, Jerrel played QB in highschool and transitioned to a WR in his time at Troy. My dude has been clocked at a 4.32 in the 40. He is going to have an immidiate impact playing special teams returning both kicks and punts, who knows when Hixon will be ready. With Steve Smith and Hixon coming off surgery and Ramses Barden not developing as quick as the Giants would like, he could see some snaps. He also played in the Wildcat at Troy, which cracks me up, can you picture Eli lininig up as WR or running down the field haha.
ROUND 4- James Brewer (OT)
I disagree with waiting this long to take someone for O-Line. Sure the G-Men have a solid line but they are about an average of 30+ years old (didn't do math). With all the injuries to this crew last year you have to wonder why it took so long to draft a guy. Anyway, James is 6'6" 323, pretty big dude. But he needs A LOT of work to roll with this line and this team. A project in the making? Kevin Boothe stepped up, but we still have a huge question mark with Shawn Andrews who we are going to pay 3.5mm this season. With all the injuries we have to this crew, we have to hope free agency will be good to us, whenever that may be...
ROUND 5- NONE- DARIUS REYNARD (I HATE THAT **** BAG)
ROUND 6- Greg Jones (LB), Tyler Sash (S), Jacquian Williams (LB)
Two linebackers, I was def. a little surprised. Greg Jones is fast and good on the inside, obviously the Giants need help in the middle of the field but Jones' speed will make him a good fit for our dismal Special Teams unit. Williams I don't really know much about except he was a teammate with first year stand out JPP. I wonder if JPP gets a finder's fee? Tyler Sash what can I say? I LOVE White safeties. I'm pretty sure the Giants haven't had a white guy in their secondary since the Jason Sehorn days and he will learn alot from Rolle and the veteran Grant. Kenny Phillips has been injury plagued his entire time with the G-Men and Sash had 79 tackles and to picks his last year in Iowa.
ROUND 7- Da'Rel Scott
His name definatley sounds like he should be an R&B singer, maybe it's me. Anyway the guy ran for 2,000 yards in his college carrer. Also, we got Bradshaw in the 7th round. Interesting to see what will happen with the RB crew in years to come.
At the end of the day it was a a pretty good draft. If I would change anything it would have been getting another O-Line beast in the 6th round, but I have faith in JR and Tommy C. Hopefully when the lockout is finally over we can make some moves in free agency.
