The Giants looked much sharper in their 41-13 victory over the Bears, but the win wasn’t enough to make people feel better about losing corner Terrell Thomas for the year with a torn ACL. The Thomas injury is a blow to a position that had little depth to begin with.

The Giants started off the scoring with a 25 yard field goal by Rhys Lloyd, which was quickly matched by a 23 yard field goal by Robbie Gould.

The Giants started off the 2nd quarter with an 18 yard run by Brandon Jacobs. After another Lloyd field goal, Gould followed with a 42 yarder to make it 13-6. The Giants, late in the 2nd quarter, scored on a 5 yard pass to Domenik Hixon to put the Giants ahead 20-6.

The Giants kept the scoring going after DJ Ware scored on a 1 yard run to make it 27-6.  In the 4th quarter, David Carr connected with Daniel Coats on a 17 yard touchdown pass to make it 34-6.  Da’Rell Scott, late in the 4th quarter, took it 97 yards to the house to make it 41-6., Khalil Bell very late in the 4th quarter, added a 1 yard touchdown to make it 41-13.

First team offense was powered by the run game. Jacobs and Bradshaw looked in midseason form. The passing game wasn’t really there. A few nice completions, but not much going on. DJ Ware looked good and Carr threw a nice touchdown pass to Domenik Hixon. Carr played well.  Da’Rel Scott’s 97 yard touchdown run was impressive. Showed off his great speed.

First team defense looked very good. Aaron Ross, who is about to become very important, played his best game in a while. Good pressure up front, as well as a good game by Jon Goff. Rocky Bernard had a good game as well. They let up a few big plays, but were much more solid on tackles than last week. Greg Jones, in addition to being a special teams demon, looked good on defense, as did fellow rookie Mark Herzlich, who had an INT. Third team defense, as a whole, looked really good.

Special teams was impressive. Greg Jones blocked a punt and made plays all over. Both punters punted well and punt coverage was good. Devin Thomas was terrific as a returner. Jernigan was not great as a punt returner, and they did let one longish kick return happen. But much better than last week.

The big news, obviously, is Terrell Thomas being done for the year. Just a huge loss. Thomas was the leading tackler last season. He can blitz and is a solid cover corner. Aaron Ross is going to have to step up. He played well tonight, but he hasn’t been good in camp. Brian Witherspoon is penciled in  to be the nickel corner.  We say penciled in  because he was carted off the field in the 4th quarter. He was to get x-rays on his knee. The depth is not good here, and the Giants may sign a vet. This is not a good situation.

The Giants definitely improved from last week, which is good, but the loss of Thomas overshadows what should have been an easy evening.
