New York Giants rookie running back David Wilson says he wasn't crying after fumbling the ball Wednesday night on his second NFL rushing attempt.

Wilson told the New York Post that he was upset but not crying.

“Nah, I wasn’t crying but I was definitely upset,’’ Wilson said Thursday. “But, I think it would have been a lot worse if I was smiling or feeling good about it. I am passionate about the game and I know that is something I have been working on and not wanting to do and for it to happen on my second carry in the opening game, I was highly disappointed.’’

After Wilson fumbled the ball, his night was over.

“Everybody says ‘Well, you didn’t play him after that,’ ’’ coach Tom Coughlin said. “Well, we’re playing the opening game of the year. It’s a divisional game. We had just driven the ball. We’re going to be a bit reluctant. This is not preseason. Let’s go for Stage 2 here. This is serious business now."

The Giants had moved the ball down the field on their second drive of the game. On Wilson's first carry he gained three yards. On his second carry, with the ball spotted at the Dallas 29-yard line, Wilson picked up two yards and then got slammed by linebacker Sean Lee, who stripped the ball and it was recovered by Cowboys safety Barry Church.

Wilson says he understood why Coughlin wouldn't let him back in the game.

“I mean, after you don’t get back on the field because of that, you kind of put one and two together,’’ the running back said. “It is not hard to understand that . It happens in football and turnovers are a part of football. It is definitely not something you want to have your name beside.’’

Wilson fumbled seven times last season in college.
