Giants May Not Have Been Too Serious About Russell Wilson

Russell Wilson signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, but before he joined the Steelers, he took a meeting with the New York Giants.

Wilson had expressed interest in playing for the Giants in the past, so while New York seemed like a darkhorse, it made sense for Wilson to at least consider the Big Apple.

However, the Giants didn’t exactly make a compelling offer to Wilson.

According to Jeff Howe of The Athletic, New York did not promise Wilson the starting quarterback job over Daniel Jones, who is coming off of a torn ACL and a miserable 2023 campaign.

So, basically, the Giants were going to bring in Wilson to compete with Jones.

Now you can see why signing with the Steelers was such an easy decision for Wilson.

Pittsburgh seemed like the best destination for the nine-time Pro Bowler all along. After all, the Steelers won 10 games and made the playoffs this past year in spite of not having a great situation under center.

Perhaps Wilson is the missing piece Pittsburgh needed to truly become dangerous in the AFC.

Even if New York was willing to provide Wilson with a guaranteed starting job, the team would not have been able to supply the same overall opportunity to Wilson that the Steelers did.

The Giants went 6-11 in 2023, and while they have certainly made some impressive moves thus far this offseason, they appear to be far from legitimately contending.

They still need receivers, their offensive line—while improved—needs help, and their defense is a work in progress (although that is probably Big Blue’s best feature at this point).

So, even if New York told Russell Wilson he would be the sure-fire starter if he joined the squad, he probably still would have picked Pittsburgh.

There’s a reason why the Steelers were always viewed as the best landing spot for the 35-year-old.
