According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the New York Giants are prioritizing the signing of WR Hakeem Nicks over restricted free agent WR Victor Cruz.
Nicks, 25, has one year remaining on his rookie contract, so the team’s decision to focus on locking him up before Cruz suggests that they see him as a legitimate No. 1 receiver.
Injuries have kept Nicks from ever playing a full season, so there’s some risk to committing to him in the long-run, but it’s pretty clear that he’s an impact player for the Giants offense when healthy.
Schefter adds that they still plan on signing Cruz to an extension as well, but Nick is viewed as the “higher priority.”
New York doesn’t have to lockup Cruz just yet, given that they can place a first-round tender on him, but then they run the risk that he could holdout at some point during the offseason and possibly into regular season like Vincent Jackson did a few years ago.
