Giants tight end Darren Waller now ‘questionable’ for Sunday night game against Cowboys
? Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

New York Giants tight end Darren Waller is now officially listed as questionable for Sunday night’s game against the Dallas Cowboys. The former Raider hit the Giants’ injury report on Friday due to a hamstring injury. Although he is questionable, Waller still participated in New York’s practice in limited fashion to end the week.

Waller was one of the league’s most productive tight ends during the 2019 and 2020 seasons. He recorded more than 1,100 yards receiving in both seasons. Injuries ended up derailing his next two seasons and he played just 20 games.

In 2022, he caught 28 passes for 388 yards with three touchdowns for the Raiders.

The Giants traded a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, pick No. 100, to Las Vegas in exchange for Waller. The Raiders picked up Cincinnati receiver Tre Tucker with that selection.

Last year, Waller signed an extension with Las Vegas that paid him $17 million per year, which is now on the Giants’ paysheet.

Along with Waller, the Giants have another pass-catcher potentially missing Week 1. Wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson is doubtful for Sunday night’s game due to a knee injury. The former second-rounder out of Kentucky posted 23 receptions for 227 yards and one touchdown last season as a rookie.

Cowboys watching three on injury report

Meanwhile, the Dallas Cowboys will also have some important decisions to make after their practice on Saturday regarding three injured players.

According to head coach Mike McCarthy, injured offensive linemen Tyron Smith and Tyler Smith could practice on Saturday after participating in team walkthroughs on Friday. The team is also monitoring safety Donovan Wilson for a possible return.

“We’re making progress,” McCarthy said of the trio.

The plan is for all three to practice in limited fashion on Saturday. If they can do that, then they could play on Sunday against the Giants. In Wilson’s case, McCarthy told reporters he’d be on a snap count.

An MRI confirmed early this week that Tyler Smith, the 2022 first-round draft pick out of Tulsa, suffered a hamstring strain. Meanwhile, Tyron Smith, the veteran former All-Pro, ended up on the practice report late in the week with an ankle injury. Jerry Jones called their status for Sunday “suspect” during an appearance on 105.3 The Fan on Friday.

Donovan Wilson missed most of training camp due to a calf strain. He led the team in tackles in 2022 with 101, a career-high for the Cowboys safety. He also had five sacks, two forced fumbles, a recovery and one interception.
