ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Falcons fear wide receiver Julio Jones will likely miss the remainder of the season with a foot injury, FOX Sports NFL Insider Jay Glazer reports. Jones, who caught eight balls for 99 yards in Atlanta's 30-28 loss to the New York Jets on Monday, played the entire game and was a factor throughout his team's final touchdown drive in the waning moments. On Tuesday, Falcons head coach Mike Smith confirmed that Jones sustained an injury and subsequently met with doctors. He'll also have a second opinion Wednesday in Charlotte, N.C. "The first reports were not encouraging," Smith said. "But we will wait and see what the second opinion (reveals)." Smith then added: "It would be premature at this point in time (to rule Julio out for the season). Again, he's going over to Charlotte for a second opinion ..." On Monday night, with the Falcons trailing by six on their final possession, Jones was flagged for an offensive interference penalty and fell to the ground when stretching for the ball. On the very next play, Jones hauled in a one-handed catch for 46 yards, amid blanket coverage from Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie. Initial diagnosis is that JulioJones season is over. Falcons sending him for 2nd opinion but they arepessimistic Jay Glazer (@JayGlazer) October8, 2013 Seven plays later, with the Falcons staring at a 3rd-and-7 deep in Jets territory, quarterback Matt Ryan avoided the blitz and tossed an over-the-middle pass to Jones, who reached awkwardly for the ball but couldn't bring it in. That was the last time Ryan targeted him for the evening. According to multiple media members, Jones was seen limping out of the team's training room after the game; but as of right now, it's hard to pinpoint when the potentially serious injury might have occurred. Glazer also reported that the Falcons (1-4) are optimistic that a second opinion on Wednesday might bring better news involving Jones, who has 41 catches, 580 yards and two touchdowns through five games.
