GM Ted Thompson has a track record for drafting top level talent, and a philosophy of passing on high priced free agents. The Green Bay Packers have become a drafting factory developing players like Aaron Rodgers, Randall Cobb, Clay Matthews through the NFL Draft, and the list goes on. Green Bay cuts loose big names such as Greg Jennings if their asking price is too high, however, there are three receivers in wait to take his place. Good drafting does that for a team, it allows the team time to develop understudies so when the star leaves, it's plug and play. Thompson says it’s buyer beware when opening up the checkbook, and the safer bet is to go through the draft, where a team can find talent cheap and abundant. "If you've done a good enough job of drafting and developing, you're going to have more of those at that stage than you can keep," Thompson said, via Tom Silverstein of JSOnline.com. "It's not a question of being tight or anything like that. It's a question of being pragmatic and saying, 'How do we do this, given the budget?' " On free agency: "You get these contracts at the time, they look really good for the team and the player, and then three years later it looks good for the player but it doesn't look quite as good for the team," Thompson said. "Or vice versa. And somebody has to break that contract, and then you have to pay the consequences of that. "But at the same time, a person in my position, you can't be so afraid of that or so concerned about not having a bad deal sometime that you become comatose and don't do anything." "But that's, relatively speaking, a good problem to have. You have to try to make good decisions in every deal that you do.”   var switchTo5x=true; stLight.options({publisher:''});
