San Francisco 49ers safety Dashon Goldson established what would become a Pro Bowl career against the Arizona Cardinals. In 2009, Goldson's first-year as a starter, he forced two fumbles and intercepted a Kurt Warner pass as the 49ers beat the Cardinals 24-9 in a Monday night game. He'll face the Cardinals again Monday when the 49ers play in Arizona. Last year, two of Goldson's six interceptions came against the Cardinals. On the negative side, he also gave up a 46-yard touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald that fueled Arizona's comeback from a 19-7 deficit to an eventual 21-19 win. Goldson also was tossed from that game for throwing a punch. The 49ers might need Goldson's emotion this week in yet another physical matchup. Goldson was nearly thrown out of the win over the Giants last Thursday when he leaped on Seahawks' running back Marshawn Lynch after he belted Lynch with what 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh said was "one of the best front-up tackles I've ever seen." He then stood over Lynch and taunted him, which drew a personal foul penalty. Nevertheless, he earned a game ball from Harbaugh for his efforts, which included preventing the deep pass, punt coverage, run support, and intercepting his second pass of the season. Goldson now has eight picks since the start of last season, which is tied for second most in the league, behind Chargers safety Eric Weddle. Coincidentally, Goldson is seeking a Weddle-type contract. The Chargers gave him $40 million over five years with nearly half of that guaranteed. Currently, Goldson is playing under the franchise tag, which is paying him $6.2 million this year.
