In what has become a long-standing and hilarious tradition, Thomas Menino, the mayor of the great city of Boston, made yet another series of egregious yet amusing gaffes when trying to rattle off names of prominent athletes who play for Boston sports teams. On Wednesday, while discussing a wager he made with the mayor of Baltimore over the outcome of the AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens, Menino absolutely butchered the names — or in one case, the nickname, of two prominent Pats players, injured tight end Rob Gronkowski and defensive tackle Vince Wilfork. Cleverly referred to as the “Master of the Sports Malaprop” by the Comcast Sports net talking head in the below video, Menino goes on to botch the names of the two Patriots in a simultaneously hilarious and cringe-worthy scene: For those who cannot view the video, a recap (via Boston.com): We’ve already got a great guy in Willcott,” (or was it Willcock?) Menino said on New England Cable News Network in a clip that was aired during Felger and Mazz on 98.5 The Sports Hub and on Comcast Sports Net. Immediately, the mayor, wearing a No. 75 Patriots Vince Wilfork jersey, is interrupted and corrected by a woman who says: “Wilfork.” Menino then continued: “…of course, Wilfork… We have it all. (Aaron) Hernandez is going to a great job as he sets in for Gonk, since Gonk’s hurt. The defense is coming together.” Oh man, he said “Willcott” while wearing Vance — er, Vince — Wilfork’s jersey. Awkward. In the above-linked piece, Boston.com does a phenomenal job of chronicling Menino’s epic brain freezes or however you wish to refer to them, and below is some video evidence of his more memorable gaffes. Referring to Kevin Garnett and Rajon Rondo as “KJ and Hondo: Saying how “Varitek splitting the uprights” has become an “ionic” sports moment: Fantastic. And so, so awkward. TweetThe post Gonk?
