NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell is apologizing to fans for having to use replacement officials during a lockout of regular refs. The impasse led to three weeks of questionable calls - and one that cost the Green Bay Packers a win. Goodell made his comments Thursday during a conference call about 12 hours after the referees' union and league agreed on a tentative deal that will allow the regular officials to return beginning with Thursday night's Browns-Ravens game. Goodell says: ''Something like this, it's painful for everybody. Most importantly, it's painful for fans. We're sorry to have to put fans through that.'' He added: ''Sometimes you have to go through something like that in the short term for the right agreement for the long term.'' The deal was struck two days after Seattle's chaotic last-second win over Green Bay in which the replacements missed a call.

NFC West Beat: Seattle is Cheating, but Does Goodell Care?

There are a lot of things we could talk about in the NFC West this week. San Francisco lost to the Vikings and Arizona dominated the Philadelphia Eagles. In a regular week, these would be some of the top headlines.Week 3, however, was not a regular week. One play of the Seattle Seahawks game against the Green Bay Packers has stolen the spotlight from the other three teams in the...

From The Desk Of Roger Goodell: A Letter To The Replacement Refs

Dear Replacement Refs, That didn’t go quite as planned, huh, guys? I mean how am I supposed to hold any leverage in negotiations when you’re making calls so bad that the talking puppets on ESPN actually spoke out against something that didn’t involve the lack of playing time Tim Tebow has been getting? We almost had them fooled. After the first week I heard a whole lot of “Hey...

For Pro Sports Commissioners, It’s Lonely At The Top

Right now, it’s safe to say there’s no love lost between NFL fans and Commissioner Roger Goodell. Everything came to an apex on Monday night, when the replacement referees — who were already drawing ire thanks to being thrown into the biggest stage in the world, a stage they were in no way prepared for — [...]The post For Pro Sports Commissioners, It’s Lonely At The Top...

There's a lesson in ref debacle

As real referees return to handle pressing matters like properly calling interceptions and field goals in Baltimore, I am wondering what, if anything, we learned from this fiasco. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is a soul-less suit? Owners are greedy? Refs are important? Real change begins with televised schadenfreude and Twitter? Because if the only takeaway is specific to officials...

So I’m having a rough season so far.  Really rough.  But I’ve still got time to turn it around.  Luckily week four is going to start...

Payton's absence shows a coach's value

When the bounty suspensions were handed down by Roger Goodell this summer and the New Orleans Saints found out they were going to be without head coach Sean Payton for the season -- and without assistant head coach (and obvious choice for interim coach) Joe Vitt for the first six games -- I promise you that more than a few of the Saints players thought, "No problem." That...
