On Wednesday afternoon Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed that quarterback Aaron Rodgers would miss the team’s Thanksgiving Day clash with the Detroit Lions, and backup Matt Flynn will start in his place. Flynn has taken all the starter reps this week and is the logical choice to start Thursday’s game. Rodgers has been out for three weeks with a broken collarbone after injuring it against the Chicago Bears in Week 9. Flynn relieved former practice squad call-up Scott Tolzien during Sunday’s game with the Minnesota Vikings with the team down 23-7. He helped rally the Packers for a 26-26 tie. In that game, Flynn completed 21 of 36 passes for 218 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He will be the team’s fourth starting quarterback in the past five games. The Packers haven’t won since Rodgers got injured, posting a record of 0-3-1, after they started the season 5-2. Green Bay signed Flynn on November 11 after he was released by the Buffalo Bills. He was Rodgers’ back up from 2008 to 2011 before signing with the Seattle Seahawks during the 2012 offseason. Flynn’s last start for the Packers came during the final week of the 2011 season and he set two franchise records that day, one for passing yards (480) and another for passing touchdowns (six). Oddly enough, that game also came against the Detroit Lions. The Packers won 45-41 that day. The 28-year-old Flynn has been well-traveled since that time, with stops in Seattle, Oakland and Buffalo. Having him back in Green Bay feels like the right fit and on Sunday against the Vikings he looked comfortable running a team for the first time in years.
