GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Packers wide receiver Greg Jennings received good news Monday when the hand injury he suffered Sunday in Green Bay's win over the Vikings turned out to only be a bruise. However, the news was not so good for rookie running back Alex Green. The Packers' third-round pick sustained a season-ending knee injury while blocking on a kickoff return early in the first quarter. Green's return to the game was announced as probable, but the injury was worse than originally expected. "Very unfortunate for Alex," coach Mike McCarthy said Monday. "He was really coming on. We were looking for him to make an impact this year." McCarthy did not yet know when Green would undergo surgery. "Any time you have these type of injuries, there's usually a seven-to-10-day period where they let the knee settle down," McCarthy said. "The surgery will take place, but as far as the details of it, we won't know until after." Green, who ran for 1,199 yards last season as a senior at Hawaii, was the Packers' third-string running back, behind James Starks and Ryan Grant. McCarthy met with Green Bay general manager Ted Thompson earlier in the day to discuss whether the team might sign an additional running back. "We're looking at all of our options and we'll continue to do so this week," McCarthy said. Cornerback Sam Shields was cleared by doctors to resume football activities Monday after suffering a concussion eight days earlier in the Packers' Week 6 win over Denver. Shields missed Green Bay's game against Minnesota due to the concussion. McCarthy also said that veteran left tackle Chad Clifton and second-year defensive end Mike Neal are "both making progress." Neal has been out the entire season with a knee injury, while Clifton injured his knee and hamstring in Week 5 and has not practiced since. The Packers (7-0) have a byethis week before traveling to San Diego in Week 9 to take on the Chargers. Follow Paul Imig on Twitter.
