Green-Ellis Steps Up When the Pats Need it Most

For a good portion of the season, the Pats running game had been in stall mode. A few nice plays here and there, but for the most part, the team has been unable to get the engine really going. That is until Sunday at Gillette Stadium, as little known BenJarvus Green-Ellis showed up and helped the team in a big way, rushing for a career-high 105 yards with a score in teh teams 20-10 win. It's the type of outing that the Pats have needed all year from someone in the backfield, and wouldn't it be typical that it would come from the most unlikely player on the roster. You could see some ability the week before when he ran for 57 yards on 15 carries with a score vs the Colts, but against a good Bills run D, Green-Ellis put up the tough yards on a day when it was better to just keep the ball on the ground. He has scored in the last four games, and the undrafted runner appears that for now he's the feature back in an offense that needs a running game if it is even going to come close to making it back to the dance in February. With no running game, Matt Cassel more times than not is out there on an island, and that's not a reciepe for victory in 2008. So keep giving him the ball, and let the other teams have to respect the Pats run game a little bit more. After all, if New England wants to take it to the next level with a backup QB, the run game is going to have be even more effective the last month and a half of the season.
