Greg Gumbel is the older brother of news and sportscaster Bryant Gumbel, and Greg is the first African-American announcer to call play-by-play of a major sports championship in the United States when he announced Super Bowl XXXV for the CBS network in 2001. He is of Creole ancestry, born in Louisiana but raised in Chicago. Both Gumbels attended De La Salle Institute and grew up in Hyde Park. Greg Gumbel did all his socializing on the North Side while living on the South Side (the same Hyde Park area as Muhammad Ali). He later lived in Lakeview, just off Lake Michigan on the north side at Melrose between Broadway and Sheridan. Greg Gumbel also resided at Edgewater Beach apartments. Bryant Gumbel told Greg Gumbel about an opening at WMAQ-TV NBC 5 in Chicago, and that sports reporter job was how Greg got his first gig. I had an exclusive with Greg Gumbel at NFL on CBS Media Day. “It’s no secret, it starts with the quarterback, and in Jay Cutler you have one of the more strong arme...

QB Jay Cutler makes good on his promise: 'It was a good outing for everybody'

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler said earlier in the week that people were panicking over '30 plays' from the previous two preseason games. Cutler made good on his promise that the offense would open up and then went out and did just that.

Phil Simms on Jay Cutler, Chicago Bears in 2013

Yes, it was just preseason, and yes it was the very lowly Oakland Raiders, but Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears looked about as dominant as one could expect last  night in exhibition game number three. Cutler and the offense looked as “midseason form” as that tired cliche says. Phil Simms knows a thing or two about quarterbacking, as he was named Most Valuable Player of Super...

Chicago Bears: Player Most Likely To Break Out In 2013

During his sophomore season at South Carolina Alshon Jeffery dominated the SEC to the tune of 88 receptions for 1,517 yards and nine touchdowns.  He looked the part of a first round NFL draft pick.  He showed great hands, leaping ability and a knack for making the tough catch.  Jeffery might have taken that success for granted because he struggled during his junior season....

Oakland Raiders vs Chicago Bears Game Recap

The Raiders faced the Chicago Bears in their third preseason game of the season and lost 34-26. There were many disappointing moments, but there were also a few nice performances. Matt Flynn started the game for the silver and black, but the quarterback really struggled. The offensive line had yet another weak performance, struggling to protect the quarterback and give him time...

Links of the Day 8/24/13

Happy Saturday. I just learned that NBC Live Extra doesn’t do replays of their earlier games. Bummer. What might some of the games best players done, had they not been sent to war? Fox Sports 1 still has some issues to work out.  Jay Cutler is rather muscular. SCOREBOARD MLB Minnesota 5, Cleveland 1 – Sam Deduno, what a guy. Texas 11, Chicago 5 – Chicago needs some Dedunoage...
