Found January 26, 2012 on Shutdown Corner:
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers, after coming oh-so-close to hiring Oregon's Chip Kelly, have apparently now landed on Greg Schiano of Rutgers. ESPN's Adam Schefter says Rutgers and Schiano are close to a deal. It seems like the choice of Schiano comes out of nowhere. His name hadn't once been associated with any of the other coaching vacancies around the league. In fact, the last time he was after the 2006 season when Rutgers went 11-2 and Michigan was believed to be interested. In 2001, Schiano took over a Rutgers program that was an absolute doormat and put them in six bowl games over the last seven years. He also comes with the endorsement of a pretty good current NFL head coach: Bill Belichick. Here's Rick Stroud at the Tampa Bay Times, passing along a quote from Peter King on the Dan Patrick's radio show. "As far as a coaching sleeper," said King, "I think Greg Schiano is going to be a very good coach in the NFL. "If you asked (New England Patr...

Oregon Coach Chip Kelly Says He Never Took Buccaneers Job

Chip Kelly's brief flirtation with the Buccaneers job was just that: brief. Reports emerged on Sunday night that Kelly would take the Tampa Bay gig but while most of the world was sleeping, the situation was flopped and Kelly bailed. Unless he didn't; Kelly went on KUJZ in Oregon and said that he never accepted the Bucs gig and that he never flip-flopped. "The only decision...

Signing Day is coming for the Ducks

The sudden coaching turmoil at Oregon did not have an effect on the recruiting visits last weekend. And given how strong the Oregon program is, I doubt even Chip Kelly leaving would either, at least right now. The lone official visitor not previously committed to Oregon was Las Vegas OG Cedrick Poutasi. Ranked as the nation's No. 10 guard. Committed players making their...

After losing out on Kelly, Bucs go back to college ranks and hire Rutgers’ Schiano

Lose out on one prominent college football head coach? No problem, just hire another. Just days after Chip Kelly spurned them by deciding to stay at the University of Oregon, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Rutgers’ Greg Schiano to be their next head coach. He takes over for Raheem Morris, who was fired after a disastrous 2011 season in which the Bucs lost their final 10 games...

A Ship Without A Captain: Buccaneers Spurned By Chip Kelly

What would appear to be a desirable head coaching job continues to go unfilled in Tampa. One year removed from a ten win season, a franchise quarterback (by all accounts) in place, supporting cast coming into their own and a great climate to spend your winter. So what gives? After firing Raheem Morris the day after the regular season ended, Tampa Bay Buccaneers co-chairman Joel...

Psst ... Guess What I Heard

The Chip Kelly circus that rolled through town late last Sunday afternoon triggered a poop storm of activity surrounding if, what and how much of what was being reported was true. It sent shockwaves through Facebook, helped shut down Twitter, and pushed Pac-12 message boards through walls thought previously to be impenetrable. Everyone with an ounce of interest in college football...

Damn! The Moment Was So Right!

Welcome to the Extra P_int where the beer is always cold, the patrons less informed, and the conversation compelling. I’ve never been a stoic, but this Monday I had the winter grumps activated by a good article gone to hell because of one human being’s fickleness. Keep in mind this is early afternoon and the day ain’t over, but it certainly appears that Chip Kelly is staying...

Chip Kelly Has Unfinished Business

Can you imagine Josh Freeman and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers running a fast paced offense like Darron Thomas and the Oregon Ducks? The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and The Oregon Ducks' coach Chip Kelly were ready to seal the deal bringing Kelly's fast paced, high powered offensive scheme to the NFL. The deal fell through when Kelly had a gut check and realized he had “unfinished...

Meeting Of The Minds: College Coach, NFL Coach, Or Just, "Football" Coach

Over the weekend, Chip Kelly was supposedly a last-minute change of heart away from leaving Oregon for the Tampa bay Buccaneers. Jim Tressel received consideration for the Indianapolis Colts' opening that ultimately went to Chuck Pagano. Les Miles' name has been bandied about as a potential pro coach. Jim Harbaugh made his bones turning Stanford around, and he nearly took...

Mike Sherman -- Most Likely Top Candidate For Buccaneers Head Coaching Job

Former head coach of the Green Bay Packers and Texas A&M Mike Sherman may be the "likely" candidate for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coaching spot.St. Petersburg-Times is reporting that out of all the candidates who've been interviewed for the head coaching opening, Sherman is the ONLY ONE who has been contacted about a fellow-up interview or to be eliminated from...

Greg Schiano's Exit Shakes Up Rutgers

There were tremors in the Northeast this morning. They were not caused by seismic waves from the shifting of subterranean plates, but they could be felt all along Cameron’s Fault Line from northern New Jersey, through the borough of New York, and up here into Connecticut. They were caused by thousands of college football fans tweeting and texting in frenzy on emerging rumors of...

Gray out as candidate for Bucs HC job, could Rutgers Schiano be in?

The Bucs began the process of elimination Thursday morning and among the first to be told he will not be hired as their head coach was Titans defensive coordinator Jerry Gray. Gray informed Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean Thursday that he was no longer being considered by the Bucs. General manager Mark Dominik is actively in the process of contacting candidates who are not finalists...
