ATLANTA - NOVEMBER 29: Quarterback Josh Freeman #5 of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers steps back in the pocket against the Atlanta Falcons at Georgia Dome on November 29, 2009 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images)
The final three performances of the regular season were enough to convince Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano to pull out the yellow card on his auspicious quarterback. Regardless of his decent statistics (27 touchdowns, 17 interceptions), Josh Freeman mishandled more than his team’s playoff chances down the stretch, tossing 9 ducks against the Saints, Rams, and Falcons.“What I can say is, a 4,000-yard passer, a touchdown record – there’s a lot of things you say, “Wow.’ Are there things that frustrate you? Yeah. There’s things that frustrate him, too. And I’m not ducking the question, because quite frankly, I really like Josh Freeman. But I want to make sure I don’t get ahead of my skis at all here and really evaluate every single thing to what’s best for this organization. Do I think Josh Freeman is going to win Super Bowls in this league? I do. So, I hope that happens here. But again, at the end of the day, I have to evaluate everything before I can say that’s what we’re doing.Spectating the unpredictable roller coaster rides that these young quarterbacks sometimes sit through can even make the viewer queasy. Studying Josh Freeman’s career and his pattern of inconsistencies perfectly compliment the stark concern of the coach. Every other year, Freeman improves. The symptoms of his star quarterback’s falling-out in 2013 are avoidable, as long as it is handled correctly.Schiano has faith in Freeman’s ability to lead the offense to the next level, a playoff berth. But, the coach’s capricious faith will have him searching for more than back-up Dan Orlovsky to bolster up the QB situation in Tampa.Finishing at 7-9 after starting at 6-4 is considered a “disappointment” for the head coach. But, as history shows, quarterback competition don’t hurt teams - quarterback controversies might. Need NFL Tickets? var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = 'http://widget.crowdignite.com/widgets/27484?_ci_wid=_CI_widget_'+_CI.counter; script.async = true; ref.parentNode.insertBefore(script, ref); })(); sr_adspace_id = 1000005525107; sr_adspace_width = 300; sr_adspace_height = 250; sr_ad_new_window = true; sr_adspace_type = "graphic";
