While Felix Baumgartner was busy breaking the sound barrier with his jump from outer space, many St. Louis Rams fans felt that it would be just a matter of time before kicker Greg Zuerlein would break the record for longest field goal in NFL history.
Zuerlein got an opportunity to do so in Sunday's 17-14 loss to the Miami Dolphins, but failed to crack the record books.
In the final seconds, head coach Jeff Fisher decided to let Zuerlein try a 66 yard field goal to try and tie the game and force overtime.
Zuerlein's kick looked to have the distance, but missed left, falling short of the record, and more importantly, losing the game against the Dolphins.
"I can make that kick. I just didn't come through," Zuerlein told reporters after the game. "I came across the ball a little bit. I should have made it."
Fisher made it sound like an easy decision to go for the 66 yard field goal. He had confidence in his kicker.
