Hall of Fame QB Dan Marino considered chasing Super Bowl ring away from Dolphins

Say the phrase "greatest quarterback to never win a Super Bowl" out loud, and the name of Dan Marino will be on the short list of responses from diehard NFL fans.

Marino only played in a Super Bowl once during his 17-year career with the Miami Dolphins--through little fault of his own--as his teams simply weren't good enough. He has since seen the likes of Peyton Manning, Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford become Super Bowl champions after leaving the franchises that drafted them. The Pro Football Hall of Famer recently admitted that he contemplated chasing a ring with another team late in his playing days.

"I definitely thought about it," Marino said on "Sports Seriously," per Max Weisman of the New York Post. "I played 17 years for the Dolphins and they were kind of going in a new direction with a new coach, and I had offers to go play other places and really thought about it, and maybe had a chance to win a championship like Matthew Stafford has done."

Daniel Chavkin noted for Sports Illustrated that Dave Wannstedt was the Dolphins coach who was ready to move on from Marino after the 1999 season. While the Pittsburgh Steelers and Minnesota Vikings reportedly showed interest in the signal-caller at that time, he ultimately decided to remain a one-club man.

"I thought about it for a long time; it just didn’t feel right," he explained. "I just decided I’ll just be a Dolphin for life, and it’s worked out great."
