The connection Cam Newton and Steve Smith made during the lockout with throwing sessions in Charlotte could carry through to Hawaii.
The stalwarts of the Panthers' offense have a good shot of earning Pro Bowl bids, based on the voting totals with less than a week of fan balloting remaining.
Newton, the rookie quarterback phenom, and Smith, the four-time, Pro Bowl receiver, are third at their respective positions in the NFC. Players and coaches, who make up the other two-thirds of the selection process, will vote next week.
With three quarterbacks and four receivers slated to go from each conference, Smith appears to have a slightly better chance of going to Hawaii than Newton, just based on the extra spot for wideouts.
Each trails the Nos. 1 and 2 vote-getters at their positions (Calvin Johnson and Greg Jennings at WR; Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees at QB).
