Last night we kicked off week 15, with the Falcons (led by 2008 AP Coach of the year Mike Smith) kicking some serious Jaguar butts. I started to think which coach deserves the same accolades this year. This has been one of the more competitive years in terms of the battle for coach of the year. There are many names that come to mind right away when thinking of worthy candidates but its important to note what people are looking for when deciding on coach of the year. The Packers are 13-0 so why wouldn’t Mike McCarthy be coach of the year? The 49ers are 10-3 after an abysmal year last year and are led by new stud head coach Jim Harbaugh, so shouldn’t it go to him? John Fox made as bold as a move as anyone and changed his entire offense based on a player who can’t play QB and now is leading the division, surely he should take it? In my mind there are several worthy choices for this year’s coach of the year honors, but I will break it down to 4 deserving candidates. 1) Gary Kubiak ...

Ron Jaworski - Alex Smith's mechanics still off

It's been a few years and 49ers quarterback Alex Smith's mechanics still suck, according to Monday Night Football's Ron Jaworski. While the former Eagles and Rams quarterback didn't assess Smith in those harsh terms, Jaworski is not backing off comments he made years ago on Monday Night Football...

Alex Smith, 49ers Face Stiff Test Against Steelers

Few people could have foreseen this week’s Monday night matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Pittsburgh Steelers having bye week implications for both teams. The Steelers? Sure. Pittsburgh is perennially in the race for not only a playoff spot, but in recent years has battled deep into the schedule for one of the top two seeds in the AFC. The 49ers, however, have not reached...

Alex Smith has been really solid for the San Francisco 49ers this year

Coach Jim Harbaugh’s faith in 27-year old QB Alex Smith has paid off in spades.  Smith is playing, by far, the best football of his NFL career so far this year.  He has played in 13 games for the 49ers this year and he has completed 221 of 358 passes (61.7%) for 2,565 yards with 15 TD passes and 5 INTs (91.5 QB Rating).  He has also carried the ball 39 times for 141 yards (3...

The San Francisco 49ers will not contend for the NFC Title this season

There is no doubt that the San Francisco 49ers have made incredible strides this season, with new Coach Jim Harbaugh taking the reigns behind a lowly team and their bust QB Alex Smith and making them into perennial winners. Not only has Smith resurfaced as a solid option, but the defense has been nothing short of phenomenal. In the future, the 49ers could certainly contend...

Jaworski: Mechanics of 49ers QB Alex Smith still lacking

Ron Jaworski, who once dedicated a lengthy "Monday Night Football" segment to dissecting flaws in Alex Smith's throwing motion, was back in his office Wednesday breaking down game film of the 49ers quarterback.

Alex Smith sacked and sacked - here's why

The much-improved 49ers might be going to the playoffs, but one thing hasn't changed from their inglorious recent past: Their quarterback is still getting treated like a pinata. Entering its meeting against the visiting...

Week 17 Fantasy Football Players to Start and Sit

By Adam McGill   Guys to Start: QB Alex Smith, SF (@ STL) – Smith is an outstanding sleeper this weekend since he plays a 2-13 Rams team who is looking like a favorite to finish dead last in the NFL. He threw for 274 yards and two touchdowns against them four weeks ago and will post similar numbers against one of the worst teams in the league. RB Rashard Mendenhall, PIT...

San Francisco 49ers (10-3) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers (10-3)

This is a huge game for both teams on Monday Night Football as they would each like a bye in the first week of the playoffs.  The Niners have now lost two of their last three games.  The Steelers have won 4 games in a row and 8 of their last 9 games, so they are red hot right now.  Here is a look at the matchups in this game: When the 49ers have the ball:  The 49ers aren’t...
