When the NFL changed the kickoff rule there was much gnashing of teeth that it would make the game more boring because every kick would be a touchback and that they may as well eliminate the kickoff and just have the offense start at the 20. Instead what we’ve had is a big bag of awesomeness. So far there have been 6 kickoffs returned for tds averaging 1 a week including 2 last week thanks to Jacoby Ford and Devin Hester. So, instead of special teams becoming less important they’ve become even more important as players like Ted Ginn and Devin Hester run wild in open space. Is it a good move to run the kick back from 8 yards deep in the end zone? Who knows, but the return guys are extra antsy now to make a big play so they’re saying screw it I’m running this thing back. Also kickers can’t really kick away from the return guys either because they think they should get a touchback every time and how dumb would they look pooching it? I love the new kickoff rules. Sure there are more touchbacks, that part was inevitable, but there are also a heck of a lot of exciting and unexpected returns happening too.
