San Francisco coach Jim Harbaugh insists the 49ers planned to have Alex Smith as their quarterback even while they examined the possibility of signing then-free agent Peyton Manning.
Harbaugh ended his weekly meeting with reporters on Wednesday by addressing what he says is the ''erroneous perception that we were flirting with Peyton Manning.''
Harbaugh called the reports silly and phony, then spoke at length about his and the team's ongoing support for Smith.
Smith signed a three-year, $33 million contract to remain in San Francisco in March, only a few days after Manning agreed to a $96 million, five-year contract with the Denver Broncos.

Stop Lying To Me Jim Harbaugh, I’m Not Stupid
Jim Harbaugh came out today and just flat out lied, saying that the 49ers had Alex Smith in their plans all along. He claimed that they were never really trying to replace him with Peyton Manning, just exploring their options.
Hm. I can’t say I believe any of that. In fact, I would go so far as to say that I’m 100 percent sure that every bit of what Jim Harbaugh said on this...
Jim Harbaugh’s lie could tarnish his reputation with his players
I’ve heard coaches stretch the truth, avoid questions they don’t want to answer and even “interpret” a question differently in order to give the response they want but it always bothers me when a coach just flat out lies to the media.San Francisco 49ers’ head coach Jim Harbaugh addressed what he called an “erroneous perception that we were flirting with Peyton Manning...
Mediocre Alex Smith has got some nerve!
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith has been mediocre throughout his NFL career and as close to a bust as it gets as a former No. 1 overall draft pick.Would some of my Eye On Sports NFL fans please tell me what the hell is wrong with San Francisco 49ers quarterback Alex Smith! The mostly mediocre, near draft bust, has done absolutely nothing throughout his, but suddenly felt...

Jim Harbaugh’s rant of lies
In a recent interview with the 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh, Harbaugh had some interesting comments when the subject of the niners’ pursuing former free agent Peyton Manning came up.
“It’s an erroneous perception that we were flirting with Peyton Manning,” Harbaugh said. “I keep hearing that over and over again. It’s silly, and it’s untrue. It’s phony. Even the...
So Jim Harbaugh Is Full Of It
Judging from his recent defensive comments about Cam Newton, Alex Smith has a bit of a thing about feeling unappreciated. It seems to be a prevailing theme for quarterbacks on Harbaugh-coached teams that lose in conference championship games. Lots of specificity there. Anyway, Jim Harbaugh wants everyone to know that Alex was his big champ all along, even though the Niners were...
Jim Harbaugh wants you to believe that the 49ers didn’t pursue Peyton Manning
Jim Harbaugh is attempting to save face. With whom, we don’t know. Alex Smith is already signed and it’s not like Harbaugh really needs to save face with Alex Smith anyway. But for some odd reason, Harbaugh decided to tell reporters gather for his post-practice media session that the 49ers didn’t pursue Peyton Manning.
But what about the fact that the 49ers put Manning through...
Harbaugh makes point to clarify QB 'flirting'
Jim Harbaugh was winding down his weekly chat with reporters after Wednesday’s OTA practice session with some rather innocuous remarks about defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga’s ability to throw the football. Somehow, the conversation turned sharply to more important guys that throw the football. Guys like Alex Smith and Peyton Manning, and why one quarterback is with the 49ers and...
Jim Harbaugh denies pursuing Peyton Manning ‘it’s phony, erroneous’
It’s confirmed: Jim Harbaugh could sell a ketchup popsicle to a woman in white gloves. Or at least he’d try to if it was in the best interest of his football team.
The 49ers coach spoke to the media on Wednesday and attempted to spin the reports that said the team pursued Peyton Manning in March.
“There’s a perception out there, and it’s an erroneous perception, that...

Harbaugh says 49ers were not 'pursuing' Peyton Manning
Jim Harbaugh wants to be clear: Despite working out Peyton Manning, the San Francisco 49ers always wanted quarterback Alex Smith. Alex Smith: The NFC West's Most Indispensable Player
Whether you are playing professional football or touch football with your family, there is always a risk of getting injured. Injuries happen in all sports and as many lifelong fans have seen, one injury can sometimes plague an entire team.

Schefter: 49ers did “try to sign Peyton Manning”
Getty Images
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh told the local media on Wednesday that they never “pursued” Peyton Manning during free agency. He stated that they were only “evaluating” him.
In my opinion Harbaugh doesn’t sound like the most intelligent person when it was obvious that the 49ers would’ve signed Manning over Alex Smith in a heart beat.
