Story lines abound in the 49ers' nationally televised rematch with the Lions on Sunday night at Candlestick Park. First, there's the ongoing relationship, if that's what you can call it, between the two coaches -- the Lions' Jim Schwartz and the 49ers' Jim Harbaugh. The two nearly brawled at the end of a hard-fought game in Detroit last October. The 49ers won it, 25-19, in the last minute with a 6-yard pass from Alex Smith to tight end Delanie Walker. A few moments later, a jubilant Harbaugh bounded across the field, tore his sweatshirt out of his pants and slapped Schwartz on the back while repeating the words, "(Bleep) yeah! (Bleep) yeah!" Schwartz then ran to confront Harbaugh about his antics and outburst. The two coaches needed to be separated by players, security and public relations staffs. The confrontation prompted the league to talk to both coaches. Since then, Harbaugh has kept his emotions in check until he reaches the sanctity of th...

Schwartz vs. Harbaugh: Heavyweight bout round two?

The Detroit Lions lost to the San Francisco 49ers last year in the final minutes, ending their bid for a potential perfect season.  Undefeated going into the game, Detroit surrendered a Delanie Walker touchdown catch on fourth-and-six with just 1:51 remaining. The game, however, will be remembered for a handshake, not late-game heroics. The game ended with the Lions trying a desperation...

49ers owner takes verbal shot at Lions coach

Some people just can't help themselves. They have to shake things up. Put San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York in that category. Although his coach, Jim Harbaugh, and Lions coach Jim Schwartz have downplayed Handshake-gate 2011 this week, York ended a 49ers pep rally Thursday afternoon with a backhanded comment directed at Schwartz. Watch the video above to see what York had...

Perhaps A Simple Nod Gesture This Year

Who could forget the controversial 2011 handshake immediately following the game between 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh and Lions head coach Jim Schwarts?  It turns out both coaches have when asked about it as we wait in anticipation for this Sunday’s matchup between the unbeaten San Fransisco and Detroit teams. “Our approach with the mini controversies are really to give them...

Week 2 Prop Bets Include Handshake-Gate Part 2, Overmatched Rookie Quarterbacks (Photos)

It's never much of a surprise when NFL players get tangled up or exchange shoves after a play is over, or sometimes even after a game finishes. That's the nature of the sport. What we don't always see, however, is coaches getting into it. We saw that last year, though, when the San Francisco 49ers beat the Detroit Lions. Following the game, Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh...

VIDEO: 49ers owner Jed York takes shot at Jim Schwartz over Handshake Bowl

With Jim Schwartz and Niners head coach Jim Harbaugh doing their best to downplay Sunday night’s rematch of last year’s Handshake Bowl, San Francisco owner Jed York is doing his best to add fuel to the fire. Video: 49ers Owner Jed York Cautions Against Hard Handshakes

Lions' Calvin Johnson misses practice

Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson did not practice on Wednesday because of a foot injury, according to the team. Head coach Jim Schwartz wouldn't say much on the injury. The injury doesn't sound serious, according to team reporter Tim Twentyman, who says Megatron appeared to be fine. "Let's put it this way. I didn't notice anything," he tweeted...

With Leather’s Watch This: Re-Re-Re-Rematch!

Nobody likes an angry Schwartz.Since last night’s NFL action was so boring – unless you’re a fan of watching Jay Cutler be the worst QB on the face of the planet, in which case that was pure pornography – I’m hoping for some of the weekend games to pick up the slack a little. That may be a rather lofty goal, though, since a quick look at the NFL schedule told me that the...

Another round for Harbaugh, Schwartz

Week 1 had just about everything an NFL fan could ask for. Peyton Manning came back and picked up right where he left off 20 months ago, RG-320 became the first opposing quarterback to win at New Orleans since the 2010 season, and Brandon Weeden began his NFL career by getting trapped under a 100-yard-long American flag. Unfortunately for Weeden, that was the best moment of his...
