The Alex Smith era could be over in San Francisco. According to Jim Trotter of SI.com, Niners coach Jim Harbaugh has informed Alex Smith that he will be going with Colin Kaepernick on Sunday versus the Saints. This comes as no surprise after the performance that Kaepernick put on during last Monday’s dismantling of the Chicago Bears. Smith, who missed Monday night’s game due to a concussion, is not being benched due to his health reasons, but rather his lack of ability to throw the ball down the field. This inability was indeed apparent 2 weeks ago in a tie, that felt more like a loss, to a mediocre St. Louis Rams team. Fans booed around the stadium as they continued to run the ball on 3rd downs, playing not to lose instead of to win. They have seen it all before too many times from the former #1 overall pick in the 2005 draft. Kaepernick quickly erased the memories of that inept offensive display on Monday night, throwing the ball down field from the moment the game started, peppering the Chicago Bears defense and leaving them with no answer for the Niners offense. Kaepernick finished 16 for 23 with 243 yards, including a 57 yard completion on the second drive of the game to Kyle Williams. Kaepernick not only brings the arm strength, ability, and confidence to make big throws, he is also very capable of running with the ball. The Niners have used him in the wildcat formation all season long and he has proven that his athletic ability alone can gain some extra yards instead of taking a sack or having to throw the ball away. With a steady quarterback, it will open up more holes for the running game, allowing Frank Gore and co. to run the ball more effectively. Harbaugh has made the call, now it is up to Kaepernick to step up and lead this football team. The 49ers looked more motivated behind Kaepernick on Monday night than they did all season behind Alex Smith, now they need to carry that momentum into Sunday’s matchup in New Orleans against the red hot Saints. It was just less than a year ago when Alex Smith had his biggest moments of his career in last year’s postseason against the Saints. Now it’s Kaepernick’s turn. - Rich Peters   The post Harbaugh To Start Kaepernick Against Saints appeared first on Bay Area Sports Nut.

Harbaugh is going with the ‘hot hand’ Kaepernick

Two days ago after Colin Kaepernick led the 49ers to victory over the Chicago Bears, Jim Harbaugh was asked who would be his starter against New Orleans. Harbaugh responded by saying, “I usually tend to go with the guy that has the hot hand and we have two quarterbacks that have a hot hand.” Well, it was reported tonight that the ‘hot hand’ he is going with is Colin Kaepernick...

Do the 49ers have a QB controversy? Week 12 preview.

I think Jim Harbaugh has seen Kaepernick at practice the last two years and has been itching to get him into a game.  Last week Harbaugh's expectations were met or exceeded and he's ready to move on.  I don't think Smith gets back on the field this season. After going a red hot 13-1 in week 11, I went 2-1 on Thanksgiving day.  For the season that makes it 106-57....

Colin Kaepernick reportedly will start over Alex Smith for 49ers

San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is not messing around. According to Sports Illustrated’s Jim Trotter, Harbaugh informed Alex Smith that Colin Kaepernick will start at quarterback on Sunday at New Orleans. Trotter’s report states that the decision was not based on medical reasons. Smith is recovering from a concussion suffered in Week 10 against the St. Louis Rams...

49ers Injury Report: Alex Smith or Collin Kaepernick?

The San Francisco 49ers shouldn’t start Colin Kaepernick on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints because he’s the hot hand but because the Niners should “make the smart call” about Alex Smith’s health, according to Bruce Jenkins of the San Francisco Chronicle. The 49ers should start Colin Kaepernick against New Orleans on Sunday because somebody, somewhere, has...

NFL quarterback controversy San Francisco 49ers

I have yet to meet a head coach who wants to deal with a quarterback controversy. Coaches, as a rule, like certainty and stability. Quarterback controversies by definition lead to the opposite. They create distractions when you're seeking focus, and they can spark division when you're searching for togetherness. Colin Kaepernick was brilliant on Monday night in leading San...

Harbaugh makes right call going with Kaepernick

Regardless of his motives or how he minces words, 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh made the correct decision by naming Colin Kaepernick over Alex Smith as the starting quarterback right here, right now. It may not lead to a more peaceful Thanksgiving Day among 49ers fans and media, who will now pick apart the call much as they did the pre-decision controversy. But that is the nature...

Jim Harbaugh Has It Right; Passing Is The Key To Victory

In this week’s edition of “Football Nation Today,” gives his take on the latest news across the NFL:1st Down: Alex tells us five things we learned from week 11, and how those things will carry over to future weeks:*There are certain teams in the league that simply do not know how to win. (Jacksonville, Cleveland and Carolina)*Andrew Luck, though he got walloped in New England...

RotoWire NFL Five Things

1. Colin Kaepernick is Worth a Pickup in Most Formats Although the 49ers have yet to commit to either Colin Kaepernick or Alex Smith (concussion) as the team's starter at this point, the upside presented by the former makes him a worthwhile speculative addition in most formats. Kaepernick would presumably have his passing upside limited, just as Smith does, by the generally...

Smith vs. Kaepernick: There Should Be No Contest

When Alex Smith returns to health there is no question he should return to the starting line-up for the San Francisco 49ers. Colin Kaepernick played a great game against Chicago this past Monday, that is true but it was just one game! As the starter for the 49ers Smith is 19-5-1 in his last 25 starts, which includes a 6-2-1 record this year. So far this season smith...

Did Jim Harbaugh start a 49ers QB Controversy?

“I usually tend to go with the guy that has the hot hand and we have two quarterbacks that have a hot hand.” That came right out of 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh after the 9ers took it to the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football. We always see the media or sometimes players start a QB controversy, but rarely we see a head coach start the fires of a quarterback battle. In all...

Urlacher To Kaepernick: "You F*****g Played Well

Even Chicago Bears' linebacker Brian Urlacher gave San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick credit after Chicago suffered a 32-7 loss on Monday Night Football. It was really the least Urlacher could do after him and the rest of the Bears' defense put together an uninspiring at Candlestick Park. Listen in to hear Urlacher's kind words to the second-year quarterback...

Plan B Bowl: Kaepernick as Flynn, Campbell as a Piñata.

Bear Hug The Plan B Bowl was as anti-climactic as many expected (unless you live by the bay, in which case we happily accepted it).  Not because it was a 6-5 dud fest, but because one team was aware there was a football game going on tonight.  Colin Kaepernick did his best impersonation of Matt Flynn, creating a quarterback controversy for the next 48 hours.  Jason Campbell meanwhile...

49ers Coach Jim Harbaugh Won't Confirm If Alex Smith Will Play Sunday

Today, less than 48 hours before the 49ers visit the Saints, head coach Jim Harbaugh said mum’s the word on whether Colin Kaepernick or Alex Smith would start in New Orleans. At this point, based on a national report, the words of safety Donte Whitner and health status of Smith, it appears 99 percent certain it will be Kapernick lining up behind center. Harbaugh said he sees...

San Francisco 49ers: Starting Kaepernick Will Lead to Super Bowl

If you pay any attention to the NFL, you know that Alex Smith has had an interesting career to say the least. The former first overall draft pick from the 2005 draft out of Utah had a pretty bum-like start to his career for the first six years, only to blossom in 2011 under the tutelage of newly-appointed head coach Jim Harbaugh. Smith had his best year statistically, throwing for...

NFL Pick ‘Em vs. Hot Chick Week 12: Bears Sexy Superfan Ashley Brooke

The good times are rolling here at BC as the win steak continues. At this point it’s almost not even fair. We went 4-1 last week and confidence is higher than it’s ever been. Our friend Ashley Ilenfeld was a very worthy opponent, but finished 2-3. This week we are facing off against another Ashley…model and Bears sexy superfan Ashley Brooke (go follow – @aYoN765). The Packers...
