NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell finally made his ruling on the Saints Bounty Scandal, handing out a severe punishment. New Orleans Head Coach Sean Payton will be suspended for the entire 2012 season. Goodell also suspended General Manager Mickey Loomis for eight games and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely. The Saints will be fined 500,000 dollars and will relinquish their second-round picks in 2012 and 2013. Analysts can now debate whether the punishment justifies the means, but under the circumstances, the Saints deserved a harsh punishment. During their run to the Super Bowl title in 2009, defensive coordinator Gregg Williams handed out cash rewards for injuring opposing players. In particular, the Saints' defense went after opposing quarterbacks Kurt Warner and Brett Favre. Williams is most at fault, which explains why his suspension is indefinite, but being that Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis knew of the bounty program, they are at fault for not pu...

Goodell shows commitment to safety

I think I left my position as vice president of officiating in the NFL too early. Why? Because I used to love to see commissioner Roger Goodell when he was angry, I mean really pissed off! I liked it better when others made him mad, but God knows I made him angry more than once. He would hold me accountable if there was an officiating mistake that happened on the field -- especially...

With Salary Cap Sanctions, Goodell Has Gone Too Far

I’ve always been a bit leery of Roger Goodell’s reign as czar of the NFL. I don’t remember a commissioner that was so perpetually at the center of controversy in the NFL. I realize that that is partially a by product of the 24/7 news cycle, but Googell often comes out with these unilateral decisions. Whether it be fines and suspensions on hits or suspensions for being disqualified...

Vote: Was NFL's Penalty for Saints Too Harsh?

Following the New Orleans Saints win in Super Bowl XLIV, NFL Commisioner Roger Goodell handed the Lombardi Trophy off to a clearly victorious Sean Payton. Payton and the Saints, who were recently accused of placing bounties on opposing teams players, were finally dealt their penalty for the alleged...

Saints hit hard for hitting hard: suspensions, fines all justified for Bounty program, lying

SCOTT JACOBS The wait is over! And for the Saints, the punishment fits the crime. Goodell drops the hammer on Saints; suspends Sean Payton for 1 year

The NFL finally handed down its punishment for the Saints bounty program today, and it’s about as severe as you’d expect from a commissioner trying to clean up the league’s violent image.  Head coach Sean Payton has been suspended for one year without pay, and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams (now with the Rams) has been suspended indefinitely for their part in...

Saints' cover-up worse than the crime

Like Watergate, the Saints’ cover-up in the Bountygate scandal that led to Wednesday’s heavy punishment from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was worse than the initial actions.

Looking Back At NFL Punishments

While RG3 was throwing for scouts at his Pro Day Wednesday, the real RG, Commissioner Roger Goodell, was throwing down Biblical-plague-level penalties in the wake of Bountygate (blame Nixon, but all conspiracies are now legally obligated to add "-gate" to the end of it... Watergate was just a damn hotel people). To recap the slaughter: New Orleans is fined $500,000 (the...
