Todd Heap always expected to retire with the Ravens. That is, until he received a phone call from general manager Ozzie Newsome on July 25.
The Ravens informed the tight end that they were cutting him to save $4.6 in salary-cap room.
"I was not expecting what was coming out his mouth," Heap told reporters in Arizona via the Arizona Republic. "But, hey, I've been around this league for a long time. I've seen a lot of different things happen and that definitely wasn't one of the most crazy things I've seen."
Heap signed a two-year contract worth about $6 million with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
Heap, 31, said he's healthy and has "many years left in front of me." He said last year's production with the Ravens (40 passes for 599 yards and five touchdowns) was "just a taste" of what he could do with the Cardinals.
"I'm looking forward to seeing what we can accomplish here," Heap said.
