Heels in the Pro’s: Shaun DraughnAs the college season comes closer to week three, a bye for the UNC Football squad, and the National Football League comes upon its second week of the season, there is a bit of news about a former Tar Heel now at the next level… second year running back and punt returner Shaun Draughn. Draughn came into the league in 2011 as an un-drafted free agent, spent some times with the Washington Redskins, but was cut as they narrowed down their team to 53 roster spots. He was then signed with the Kansas City Chiefs early in October, doing most of the year on the practice squad, but finally making the roster with three games left in the 2011 season. In 2012 he played all sixteen games, being listed as the third string back, with the Kansas City franchise, accumulating 233 yards and two touchdowns on 59 attempts, seeing action mostly on third downs. The former Carolina back also caught 24 passes for 158 yards. He will now be donning a Baltimore Ravens’ uniform, where he will be doing his work mainly on special teams from the sounds of it… “They told me I’m a special teams guy,” Draughn said. “It’s basically the same role I had last year in Kansas City, where I came in on third down, and just be ready when I’m called.” He had done the pre-season with the Chiefs before being cut by the Kansas City franchise when they had their final roster cuts. When you are a second year man getting onto any team after being cut must feel pretty damn good. Going with the Ravens should be a good fit for the roughed back, who I can see getting time giving breathers to Ray Rice.
