Zackary Lysek, the coroner of Northampton county announced that the toxicology reports for 29 year-old Garrett Reid, the late son of Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid, show that the cause of death was an accidental heroin overdose.
Garrett was found dead in a Lehigh University dorm room this summer during Eagles Training Camp on August 5th. Reid was brought to training camp to help out with the Eagles strength and conditioning program over the summer.
Reid had suffered in the public’s eye with his addiction dating back to 2007 when he admitted to being under the influence after ramming a car with his Jeep shortly after he ran a red light.
The most chilling factor to this case is that five years ago he was quoted telling a judge, “I don’t want to die doing drugs. I don’t want to be that kid that was the son of the head coach of the Eagles, who was spoiled and on drugs and OD’ed and just faded into oblivion.”
The Reid family claims Garrett had been doing well with his addiction, but shortly after his death, head coach Andy Reid went public suspecting his oldest son had had a relapse.
Garrett’s death came with an outbreak of support from the NFL and Philadelphia community at large. Notable names at the funeral included Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
