Jeffrey Lurie must do what’s best for business
Owning an NFL franchise is a very profitable business. Jeffrey Lurie has profited immensely since purchasing the Philadelphia Eagles back in 1994. He bought his new toy with $195 million, mostly provided by his mother. So when it comes to being a hardcore, shrewd businessman, Lurie can’t take the moniker of being a self-made billionaire, the teams current value. Most people in that position are known to be able to make the hard and sometimes not, the most popular decisions for the good of the business.
Andy Reid has been a very important cog in the process of building this successful business. Since Lurie hired Reid as head coach in 1999, the brand has gone from being one that was never a serious contender, to one that has always been in the Super Bowl conversation. Merchandising took off and Lurie was able to build a state of the art stadium to replace the dilapidated concrete bowl on Pattison Avenue. Luxury suites and personal seat licenses aside, Lincoln Financial Field is sold out for every game. Reid has won a lot of games and despite the four NFC championship losses and lone Super Bowl failure, most of the fan base still held out hope that he would finally get it done.
But here we are in year 14 and the Eagles have free fallen to the lower depths of the league with a record of 3-7, largely due to Reid’s poor player personnel choices, game planning, in-game management and that ill-advised coaching promotion. Lurie obviously has at least noticed the decline as he dubbed this season as ’8-8 is not acceptable’. He drew a line in the sand for the first time and Reid is one loss away from crossing it. And with 6 games remaining, Reid has no shot of surpassing Lurie’s standard. After 6 straight losses, the team is playing with no purpose and no direction. Surprising for a team whose franchise quarterback vowed this season be dedicated to Reid’s son, Garrett, who died of a drug overdose at training camp this summer. Or a roster, that on paper, has arguably the best talent in the conference. Both sentiments, which were met with overwhelming optimism, have been the poster child for disappointment.
What Lurie has allowed Reid to become is a lame-duck coach and the team is playing like it. And as much as Reid says he can turn this mess of squad around, all he’s saying is that if he going out, he’s going out his way….not what’s best for the future of the franchise. Case in point, when Michael Vick is ready to return from his concussion, he’ll be the starter. When what this franchise needs, is to find out if Nick Foles can play in this league or if it needs to draft a signal caller or find one via free agency. Or if first-round pick Danny Watkins, can be a starting guard, instead of a guy nobody else in the league wanted, who was sitting on his couch watching the RedZone channel for 9 weeks! Frankly, I don’t blame Reid for this mentality, because why should he care about what the 2013 Eagles are if he’s not here. But as the owner, Lurie should care and should have moved on from him after Sunday’s no-show in D.C.
There is such a dichotomy on the subject if Reid should be allowed to finish the season, between fans and pundits all over the airwaves. The majority of fans have seen enough and want him gone now, while his coaching fraternity buddies think he’s earned the right to finish the season because of what he’s done for this franchise.
But, for the sake of the fans and the franchise, as much as you love Reid, you have to start thinking like a shrewd businessman and make the tough decision, because just like you filed for divorce from your best friend, Christina…Mr. Lurie, now it’s time again.

NFL Rumors: Forget Cop-Out Excuse, Quitting Philadelphia Eagles Would Be Stupid For Andy Reid
Andy Reid will not be coaching the Philadelphia Eagles past the 2012 NFL season. I know it, you know it, Reid knows it. Everybody knows it, and it is the right decision, regardless of how supportive of Reid Eagles’ owner Jeffrey Lurie has been through the years. It is time for a change.
But for anyone in Philadelphia who expects Reid to quit during this season, well, that is just...

NewsTags: Andy ReidPhiladelphia EaglesI have to compliment Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie for his discipline and consistency in staying out of his coach’s way. He doesn’t meddle and that’s what you want out of an owner, but he should fire Andy Reid now and not wait for another six weeks.
Firing Reid now would put an end to...
Injury SPIN: Reid Finds Another Way to Limit McCoy…Get Him Concussed
Andy Reid is awful. I will never understand the national perception that this guy is great. There was one point in the game on Sunday where the Eagles rookie QB had passed the ball 17 times and McCoy had rushed only 5 times. When asked why he didn't run more he replied by claiming the Redskins would be expecting the run. Really, Andy! There are a few things you can rest...
Andy refuses to step down...
I admire Andy Reid for hanging in with his assignment until the very end... And let's face it, until the Eagles are mathematically eliminated from the 2012 divisional race in the NFC East, there is a case to be made for Reid's stubborn clinging to his mission's objective...
But barring a modern-day Miracle of Lourdes, Reid's tenure is over in Philadelphia.

Cal (Finally) Fires Jeff Tedford
Two weeks ago I called Cal coach Jeff Tedford the "Andy Reid of college football" as both mens' coaching careers hung in the balance. While Reid still clings to life in Philadelphia, Cal has let Tedford go after nearly eleven seasons in Berkeley. Like Reid, Tedford brought his team to an unprecedented level of sustained success, but like Reid, it was time for him to...
Jeff Lurie Should Fire Andy Reid Now if He Insists on Going Back to Vick
Ever since Michael Vick went down with his concussion, I’ve been pounding the drum that Nick Foles should remain the Eagles’ starting QB for the rest of the season, regardless of how he or the team performs.
I even went so far as to say that Andy Reid would be selfish not do so.
Before all the Vick lovers come crying, this is not about him. My reasoning for starting Foles is...
Philadelphia Eagles: 15 Players Who Won't Return In 2013
The Philadelphia Eagles are in the middle of their worst season to date since 1999. With a combination of poor play and poor coaching, the Eagles find themselves at 3-7, by far the worst in the NFC East, and just about the league as well. While head coach Andy Reid will most likely go down, there is no doubt much of the 2012 Philadelphia Eagles team will go down with him. With the...
Fear and Loathing on the Philadelphia Eagles
At 3-7, the Philadelphia Eagles’ owner Jeffrey Lurie and the Philly fan base are afraid and disgusted with the result of the 2012 season. Afraid because of the constant possibility of making the wrong decision in firing longtime head coach Andy Reid and disgusted with how often Reid has let everyone down season after season. Whenever you make a change at Head Coach, it’s a lot...
Andy Reid Won’t Quit on Coaching the Philadelphia Eagles
Image via USA Today
Andy Reid’s job as head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles is safe at least through Monday night, per a report in the Daily News. And if you’re hoping that Reid will show mercy and throw himself on the sword of unemployment, you’re out of luck. It ain’t happening.
Reid was asked whether his own leadership has been rendered ineffective in trying to motivate...
Panthers-Eagles Preview
Not that the woes of Andy Reid and the Philadelphia Eagles have been flying under the radar, but now things could turn uglier as they come under the national spotlight.
A potentially hostile home crowd awaits them Monday night with the Eagles mired in the longest losing streak of Reid's tenure - which appears to be nearing an end - as they face the Carolina Panthers in a matchup...
What’s Left For The Eagles In 2012?
The saying “the season is over” is a common one in football. It comes out when a key player goes down or when a team knows they have little to no playoff hopes. I think “the season is over” is a common mindset among Eagles fans right now. However, there are still six games remaining. So what can we learn during those six games?
At this point, it seems that Andy Reid is...
A Philadelphia Eagles Thanksgiving: What We Can Be Thankful For
It’s true that this 2012 Philadelphia Eagles team has played more like the prey, rather than birds of prey, but in the spirit of Thanksgiving I thought it would be better to take a look at the positive side of things. There hasn’t been much to cheer about this season, unfortunately. And, we’re facing a future with the most uncertainty since after the 1998 season. However...
The Taylor Swift-themed Andy Reid parody song is amazing (Video)
For all you Philadelphia Eagles fans who aren't exactly pleased with head coach Andy Reid, this song parody might be the best thing you see all week.
It uses Taylor Swift's hit song, "We are never ever getting back together" as the inspiration and it might be the best parody song we've seen in awhile:
It's Time for Reid and Turner To Be Relieved as Head Coaches
When it comes to finding out whether or not head coaches are getting through to their teams, the biggest indication is if the team is giving their maximum effort. Looking at the performances of the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers last Sunday, it appears the respective coaches have lost their team. The Eagles lost 31-6 to the Washington Redskins, which drops the team to...
Philadelphia Eagles fan seeks tickets in exchange for Halloween candy
Let's face it. Not everyone has the extra cash to drop on a pair of Monday Night Football tickets. They just don't come cheap anymore. However, one Philadelphia Eagles fan is getting creative in how he plans to fund his trip to next week's Eagles game vs the Carolina Panthers on MNF. From Craiglist: I’ll trade my leftover Halloween candy for tickets to the Eagles...
