The Cleveland Browns haven’t had the best of luck with QBs since becoming an NFL franchise again. Tim Couch, Kelly Holcomb, Ken Dorsey, Charlie Frye, Ty Detmer, Derek Anderson, Brady Quinn and a handful of other players have tried to lead the Browns out of the doldrums they have been in since before Art Modell moved the original Browns franchise out of Cleveland. Besides Derek Anderson’s unexpected 2008 season, each season has been pretty much a failure.
The Browns enter the 2010 season with former Carolina QB Jake Delhomme penciled in as the starter, but selected Colt McCoy with the 85th pick in the draft. Most Browns fans began popping Xanax as soon as they saw the selection, especially since the Browns passed up on Jimmy Clausen a couple times when they had the opportunity to land him. Analysts on ESPN and the NFL Network refused to talk about his lack of arm strength or his size once the selection was made. They wanted to talk about the last big name QB as much as possible. Many thought he would have been selected before Tim Tebow, and now he dropped into the 3rd round. They started talking about him being playing in the ultra competitive Big 12 and how hard a worker he is, and my personal favorite description; he is the all-time wins leader at QB in NCAA. All of these things don’t mean a thing in the NFL. Can you make the throws necessary to win, and can you read defenses? You know who else was everything that the analysts described? David Greene. Greene was the all-time leader in wins when he left Georgia. He played in the ultra-competitive SEC. He was also undersized, lacked arm strength, and decision making. He was also the 85th pick in the NFL Draft. He was also picked to be a successor to a veteran QB. Oh, and he was drafted by Mike Holmgren. He couldn’t cut it in the NFL and retired after 3 uneventful seasons. What is he doing now? Just what every washed up QB does – he is selling insurance.
My advice to Browns fans? Pray that LeBron stays with the Cavs.
