Cleveland Browns president Mike Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert held an end-of-the-year press conference on Thursday to finally put a wrap on this season and to look forward to what should be an eventful offseason. Holmgren stressed the fact that the Browns will stay the course in the process of rebuilding what was obviously a broken, depleted roster. “The way I’m looking at it, we had to have a huge turnover on the roster, new coaching staff, new system, and all the stuff that went on in the off-season,” Holmgren said. “The difference is we’re not going to say ‘we’re 4-12 again, let’s blow everything up,’ go sign somebody here without a team around him perhaps that can support him. The difference is we’re going to stay the course, gonna do it a certain way. While this press conference was to meant to shed some light on this season and the current state of the team, some might feel frustrated by the lack of clear a...

Random Browns Thoughts on a Friday

This will be boring for those of you who follow along on Twitter, but that’s the way it goes. This morning I listened for a few minutes as Kiley and Booms broke down (over) the Mike Holmgren press conference and I was left with a few thoughts, namely there was absolutely nothing that Mike Holmgren could have said yesterday for some people.  I would love to know what the perfect...

Browns president promises to "stay the course"

Cleveland president Mike Holmgren says he's disappointed and frustrated with the Browns' lousy season, but he pledged to stick with his plan to rebuild the franchise. Holmgren and general manager Tom Heckert met with the media for more than an hour Thursday and both pledged to "stay the course" with the Browns, who went 4-12 and are the only AFC North team not...

Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert Address State of the Browns

“I have confidence.  We will get this done.” – Mike Holmgren Mike Holmgren and Tom Heckert didn’t pull a lot of punches in my opinion.  Without throwing anyone under the bus, and while trying to be supportive of current players and coaches, they indicated that they need to get better across the board from year one to year two of the Pat Shurmur era.  On...

Mike Holmgren promises Cleveland Browns will 'stay the course,' but how much progress have they made?

Browns President Mike Holmgren promises the Browns will "stay the course." Debate on exactly how much progress the current course has made is both fair and unconvincing on the affirmative side.

The Cleveland Browns have a plan? How about sharing it? Bud Shaw's Sports Spin

The last time Mike Holmgren held a press conference he lectured non-believers and blamed the poor record on some bad breaks. It's going to take a lot more than faith and good fortune, Bud Shaw writes in his Spin column.

What I Expect From Holmgren and Heckert’s Press Conference – (Not Much)

Yesterday Pat Shurmur seemed relieved in giving his review of the tumultuous first season with the Cleveland Browns.  He talked about how it wasn’t good enough.  He talked about hiring an offensive coordinator.  He talked about cherishing the opportunity for a real off-season this year with a roster of players he now knows pretty intimately.  As far as looking toward the...

Mike Holmgren says Cleveland Browns are 'driven' to improve, but 'we're not going to blow it up'

The Browns president pledges to "stay the course" with the team's philosophy of building through draft, but there is less clarity on the future of quarterback Colt McCoy and running back Peyton Hillis.

Browns will plow ahead, improve offense

BEREA -- The reassuring Mike Holmgren returned Thursday, the grandfatherly one who promised the Browns will get better, that things are really not that bad and that the team is committed and driven to succeeding. He also elaborated on his statement last month that a 4-12 record for the Browns does not mean it's "business as usual" for the team "We know what we...

Holmgren: McCoy will face quarterback competition

Much like Browns head coach Pat Shurmur, Browns President Mike Holmgren was measured in his evaluation of Colt McCoy during his season-ending press conference. “My opinion of Colt hasn’t changed,” said Holmgren. “He can be, could be [a franchise quarterback]. But I’m not ready to anoint Colt yet.” Holmgren indicated that McCoy will face competition…
