After a tryout on Wednesday, former Seattle Seahawks running back Justin Forsett has come to terms with the Houston Texans, as was revealed on Twitter via Forsett’s personal account. The details of the deal have not yet been disclosed. Forsett spent the first four years of his career in Seattle after being drafted in the seventh round in 2008. For his career, Forsett has rushed for 1,237 yards while averaging 4.6 yards per carry. He has also caught 97 passes for 730 yards out of the backfield. Forsett has scored 8 TDs combined on the ground and through the air. Forsett also has some history has a return man, fielding 46 kicks and returning them a total 372 yards. Forsett was relatively productive during his time with Seattle, however, he saw decreased playtime in 2011, resulting in the Seahawks’ deciding to move in a different direction in their backfield, hence Forsett’s unrestricted free agency. Forsett’s signing does not guarantee he will make the Texans final 53-man roster, but does give him the opportunity to compete with an NFL team in training camp. Forsett will be going head to head with third year RB Javarris Williams and undrafted rookie free agents Davin Meggett and Jonathan Grimes. Looking ahead, it’s obvious Arian Foster and Ben Tate will be the #1 & #2 heading into the season. Most NFL teams keep and use three RBs on their active roster and perhaps keep a fourth on their practice squad. This should at least be the case given how much the Texans run the football, coupled with the team’s recent history with injuries at all positions. What has become clear is what the Texans are looking for in their #3 RB, a multi-talented, versatile back who can carry the ball, catch it out of the backfield, and contribute on special teams whether as a return man or otherwise. The eventual winner of the third running back position will be the player who best fits this description, and Forsett is probably the most proven commodity in that department, giving him a slight leg up heading into next month’s training camp.  Be sure to check out other great articles at Sports Media 101.
