After starting the season 5-0 the Houston Texans suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday night against the visiting Green Bay Packers and their red hot QB Aaron Rodgers. The Texans never really looked into this game to me all night. After stopping the Packers offense on their first possession of the game the Texans got called for a neutral zone infraction and gave the ball right back to Rodgers and the Packers. On the following play Rodgers hit Jordy Nelson deep to give them a lead they’d never give back to the Texans all game long.
Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub watches as his team takes first loss of the season on Sunday night.
The Texans offense could never get it going on Sunday night against Green Bay. The Texans weren’t able to stay on the field long enough as an offense all game long. Coming into this game QB Matt Schaub had only been sacked 3 times and thrown 2 INT’s, the Packers got 3 sacks on Schaub and he threw 2 INT’s in this game alone. Schaub finished the game with a passer rating of 56.6, going 20-33 for 232 yards passing. For the first time all season Houston Texans RB Arian Foster was held to under 20 carries and under 80 yards rushing. Foster who did still have 2 TD’s has been the workhorse of this Texans offense all year, but the Packers didn’t allow him to get any big runs on them early in the game. This forced the Texans to have to go to throwing the ball after they went down by more than 2 scores in this one. The only bright spot on offense was WR Andre Johnson surpassing the 10,000 yard mark for his career becoming the 6th fastest player to ever do it. Johnson who is now 31, had a decent game catching 8 passes for 75 yards has been close to getting to this milestone now for a couple of weeks. But it probably meant more to get it at Reliant Stadium in front of the home crowd that has given him support over his whole NFL career.
Houston Texans WR Andre Johnson finished game with 8 catches and 75 yards receiving, becoming the 6th fastest player to 10,000 yards in a career on Sunday night.
For the first time all year the Texans defense looked bad. Packers WR Jordy Nelson looked unstoppable as he was blowing past Houston Texans defenders all night. The Texans defense gave up 427 total yards in the game and allowed QB Aaron Rodgers to throw for 6 TD’s on Sunday night at Reliant Stadium. All this given up by a defense that allowed only 73 points total all season coming into the game against the Packers. Much like the offense there was only 1 bright spot for the Texans defense this week after losing defensive captain and leader Brian Cushing last week for the season. DE JJ Watt continued to dominate collecting 2 more sacks and another pass deflection this week against the Packers. Watt who came into the week trailing Clay Matthews by 1 sack took back his top spot after having 1 sack taken away last week. The Texans host the Ravens next week and will have to learn from this as they attem[t to right the ship against another good team this week.
