The person who retaliates is always the one who gets caught, not the person who initiates the transgressions. Such is the case for Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith, who was informed he was going to be fined $21K by the NFL for kicking Miami Dolphins G Richie Incognito during last Sunday’s 30-10 Texans victory. Smith however, was not so much disappointed that he received a fine, but rather was upset that Incognito was not also fined for his role in the altercation.

As the videotape clearly shows, as Dolphins RB Daniel Thomas fumbled the football, Smith was in good position to recover the fumble, but was tackled from behind by Incognito. As the ball bounced around and was eventually recovered, Incognito was still clearly holding onto Smith’s ankle. In the process of trying to release himself from Incognito’s grip, Smith kicked him for good measure, finally freeing his leg.

Incognito has a reputation of being a dirty player, but apparently the NFL didn’t feel he did anything over the top with regard to Smith on that particular play. As a biased Texans fan, not only is it clear that Incognito wrapped Smith up, illegally preventing him from recovering the loose balls, Incognito plainly continued holding onto Smith well after the play was dead. Smith’s kick was unquestionably finable, but it baffles me that the NFL would allow a repeat offender like Incognito walk away from the incident unscathed.

Aside from the fine, Smith was back at practice Friday and appears to be ready to play Sunday when the Texans travel to Jacksonville to take on the Jaguars.
