Sunday night the Houston Texans reduced their active roster to 75 players after releasing and making other injury-related roster moves with 15 of their former employed. As always there was a mix of surprises and expected cuts. Season threatening/ending injuries always make the decision a bit easier for the coaches, so since four of the fifteen were walking wounded, the Texans coaches were only really forced to cut eleven players who would have otherwise suited up and continued practicing today.  Among those cut Sunday night were RB Davin Meggett, FB Derrell Smith, WR Bryant Johnson, WR Mario Louis, OT Nick Mondek, G Kasey Studdard, C Thomas Austin, DE Jimmy Saddler-McQueen, LB Omar Gaither, CB Torri Williams, and P Brett Hartmann. NT Sunny Harris and LB Greg Williams were injured when waived and could be brought back on injured reserve. Rookie K Randy Bullock has been placed on IR and ILB Darryl Sharpton has been placed on the PUP (physically unable to perform) list. The Tex...

Derek Newton Named Starter

It was confirmed today by Head Coach Gary Kubiak that second year right tackle Derek Newton will be the starter heading into the 2012 Houston Texans campaign. Despite a camp battle with veteran Rashad Butler, it felt like Butler’s poor play is what gave way to name Newton the week one starter. Newton did show some bright spots and some potential of being a good NFL football...

Newton lands right tackle spot for Houston Texans

Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak says Derek Newton has won the starting job at right tackle, beating out Rashad Butler. The 6-foot-6, 318-pound Newton was a seventh-round draft pick in 2011. Butler, entering his sixth season with Houston, was sidelined much of last season with a left triceps injury. Kubiak met with both players on Monday before announcing his decision. The Texans...

Report: Texans may lock up Connor Barwin soon

Getty According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, there’s a chance the Houston Texans could get an extension done with linebacker Connor Barwin before the end of this season. Before i get out of Houston, still a good chance Texans get extension done for Connor Barwin, but very unlikely Schaub deal done in 2012… — Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) August 28, 2012 Barwin...

The Rundown: Texans vs. Saints

The final preseason appearance for the majority of the Houston Texans starters saw the New Orleans Saints defeat the hometown team 34-27. The first half of football was action packed with plenty of offense and turnovers in which the turnovers actually proved to be the biggest disappointment for the Texans on Saturday night. The Texans stayed in their base defense the majority of...

Fantasy Football Sleepers: AFC South

Matt Schaub (QB) (ADP:98.6) Like seemingly all of the Houston skill position players, Matt Schaub is considered a risky pick due to his inability to stay healthy. Schaub was off to a fine start in 2011 before a Lis Franc injury got him in the Texans' tenth game. In 2009-2010, Schuab managed to play and start all 16 games and passed for over 4300 yards each season, finishing as...

Case Keenum Vying For Texans Final QB Spot

Gary Kubiak said Tuesday that only John Beck and rookie Case Keenum will see action at quarterback in the Texans’ final preseason game against Minnesota on Thursday night as he tries to decide whom to keep as the third QB behind Matt Schaub and T. J. Yates. Beck will start and play the first half. Keenum will play the third and fourth quarters. The Texans have to cut their roster...

The Bubble Situation

The Pogs: New Orleans Edition

NEW ORLEANS – The third pre-season game against the perennial NFC power New Orleans Saints featured the starters through the entire first half.  It was a matchup that most considered a major test for the Texans’ pass rush and secondary.  However, prior to the game, Wade Phillips made it known there would be no blitzing and the defense would operate in its base “vanilla”...
