The Houston Texans, unable to find a trade partner for WR Jacoby Jones, released the receiver on Tuesday evening. The selection of WR/KR DeVier Posey from Ohio State University made Jones and his high salary expendable. Houston, according to various reports, tried to move Jones via trade during the third day of the NFL Draft but were obviously unable to find a trade partner will to take on his salary. The Houston Chronicle reported a trade rumor over the weekend which had the Cleveland Browns sending QB Colt McCoy to the Texans in exchange for Jones. Jones only accounted for 512 receiving yards last season despite the team playing the majority of their games without WR Andre Johnson. Jones drew criticism from several Texans fans after dropping a first-quarter punt in the AFC Divisional playoff game against the Baltimore Ravens. In addition to DeVier Posey, the Texans also selected Michigan State University WR Keshawn Martin. Eric Schmidt is the owner/editor of thepigskinreport.com. ...

Enemy No. 1 for Jones: he never felt pressure

Last training camp I grabbed Jacoby Jones as he walked off the practice field. I wanted to talk to him about his new contract. The Texans had just signed him for 10.5 million over three years, and there seemed to be some meaning in that. Kind of a "Just so we're clear on this, we're expecting a 10 million receiver out of you" sort of message. I asked him if he...

Texans' GM succeeding behind the scenes

Usually it is Bob McNair, the owner, in the locker room after the game talking to reporters. The job suits him. He's got that whole old-guy Texas way about him, with the slow, pebbled drawl. Then it goes to Gary Kubiak, the coach, another native Houstonian. He's younger, but he's got that thing, too. And then there is Rick Smith, the general manager. He's not from...

Houston Texans 2012 Draft Grades: Pass With Flying Colors

Round 1, Pick 26 – Whitney Mercilus (OLB/DE) With their first pick, Houston selected Whitney Mercilus, OLB from Illinois. Mercilus is a speed demon. He will bring an unrivaled amount of athleticism to the defensive front, and provide consistent pressure on the quarterback. Mercilus may not be an immediate starter, but expect to see him rotate in and get substantial playing time...
