The final preseason game of the year for the Houston Texans probably has little public appeal. Tonight’s game at home against the Minnesota Vikings will almost exclusively feature the team’s backup players and those fighting for a spot on the final 53-man roster. The starters will not see any of the field as they rest and prepare for their regular season opener in Miami against the Dolphins a week from Sunday. While the casual Texans fan might not be overly excited about tonight’s game, more than any other this game will help to shape the Texans roster and solidify the squad taking the field each week in 2012.

There is plenty of intrigue in tonight’s game across the board. Almost nobody seeing the field tonight is guaranteed a roster spot so for those who like to see players at a high level of intensity should tune in. Those who watch will get a solid dose of QBs Case Keenum and John Beck, probably the highest profile non-starting position battle remaining (#3 QB). The following are some other players and situations to keep an eye on in tonight’s contest.

  • WR DeVier Posey – we haven’t seen much from Posey thus far in the preseason as he tries to both adapt himself with the Texans and re-acclimate himself with the game of football following his virtually year long suspension from Ohio State a year ago. The third round pick will be seeing a lot of action tonight and while it’s doubtful his roster spot is on the line, a disastrous showing could potentially leave him in limbo.
  • RB Jonathan Grimes – for maybe 75% of the other teams in the NFL, Grimes would be a surefire third running back, if not better, based on his performance this preseason. Problem for Grimes is he’s trying to make a roster that features the best stable of RBs in the league. The ball is slightly out of Grimes court on this one, but there has been talk of keeping four RBs on the active roster. The best Grimes can do is make the coaching staff’s decision on him incredibly tough. I see little doubt that Grimes at least winds up on the practice squad, which with the Texans isn’t always such a bad thing when you’re a rookie RB (see: Foster, Arian).
  • Defensive Line – this is the one unit on the Texans that really suffered from injuries this preseason, losing starters DE J.J. Watt and NT Shaun Cody for significant lengths of time. They’re locks to make the roster of course, but their absence has given some other guys opportunity to show what they can do, making cuts on the D-line difficult. Those to watch tonight are DEs Mitch King and Keith Browner and NT Hebron Fangupo.
  • Defensive Back – perhaps the deepest position group the Texans have. Past the starters, they have seven guys who have largely played well enough to make the final roster and done little to separate themselves in the process. Their respective fates could be determined with just one play tonight, whether it be an INT or a big hit in special teams coverage.
  • WR Trindon Holliday – the punt and kick return sensation gets his last opportunity to make the Texans’ roster outright based solely on his return skills. With two return TDs already in his pocket, Holliday probably doesn’t need to bring another back to the house, but will need to continually show he can significantly impact the field position battle while demonstrating sound ball security.
