Coach Gary Kubiak lamented in the team’s inability to retain its veteran leaders and star talent from its strong 2006 NFL Draft in first overall pick Mario Williams (signed with Buffalo Bills), second-round selection DeMeco Ryans (traded to Philadelphia Eagles) and third-round offensive tackle Eric Winston (released; signed with Kansas City Chiefs).
“I’ve never been part of a better draft class in all my years of coaching,” Kubiak told John McClain of the Houston Chronicle.
“Obviously, it’s been a difficult 10 days,” Kubiak added. “We’ve lost some key players who are tremendous people and leaders. They played a big part in our building process. It’s going to be difficult to replace them, but obviously we have to move on and other players have to step up.”
