Josh Bidwell said last week that he had overcome a recent injury and he punted for the Redskins in their win Sunday over Philadelphia. But the team will have a new punter at Redskins Park Thursday.

Washington is expected to sign Hunter Smith, who appeared in 13 games for the Redskins in 2009, to a one-year deal Thursday morning and Smith will be the team’s punter Sunday against Green Bay, according to a league source.

The Redskins already have a full 53-man roster, so it is likely they will drop someone to make room for Smith. It seems very doubtful that they would carry two punters.

Bidwell did not practice Wednesday and no explanation was offered by Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan. Bidwell hurt his hip during pre-game warmups at St. Louis on Sept. 26. An MRI last week revealed no structural damage, he said, and he hoped the injury was simply the loosening of scar tissue.

Bidwell punted five times at Philadelphia last Sunday, averaging 37.2 yards per punt and placing one inside the 20-yard line.
