With the Denver Broncos apparently having the day off yesterday, the Indianapolis Star finally devoted some time to the Indianapolis Colts' roster. Their focus was on the one roster position still of major concern heading into 2012: cornerback.

As Mike Chappell pointed out, the numbers don't lie with regard to the Colts pitiful performance against the pass last season. The Colts finished 15th overall against the pass based on yardage, but that's simply a by-product of teams having significant leads in the fourth quarter of games and running out the clock. The number that's really shocking is the Colts' defensive passer efficiency rating.

Only the woeful Minnesota Vikings secondary performed worse than the Colts last season. Opposing quarterbacks had a 103.9 rating against the Colts last season. A major factor in that rating was a league worst 71.2 per cent completion rating. That number might be excusable playing in the same division as Drew Brees or Tom Brady, whom the Colts saw once each last season. But that number is extremely high considering that they played three and a half games against Blaine Gabbert, Tyler Yates and Jake Locker.

Another scary number reflects the Colts lack of experience. While Jerraud Powers has made 34 NFL starts in his career, the rest of the Colts nine cornerbacks on the roster have 14 starts among them. Look for that to change before the start of training camp.

The Colts have been widely reported to be negotiating with Dallas for disgruntled former first round pick Mike Jenkins. To this point, Dallas' asking price has been either too steep or they're actually not shopping him. The former situation is more likely.

Sources close to the situation tell Colts 101 that the team is also in the hunt for some other players who have significant starting experience in the NFL. At this point, it's some details regarding contract terms that are causing the hold up.

The Colts can't head into camp with Jerraud Powers and a collection of nickel backs. They need another starting caliber cornerback and Ryan Grigson and Chuck Pagano know that. Count on the Colts making another significant move at that position before the end of July.
