The Indianapolis Colts have had a hole at safety for quite some time now. It wasn’t so much that there was weak play as it was the fact that the talent at the position is an unknown. Delano Howell was slotted to start opposite LaRon Landry for most of the off-season. Now, the Colts have signed safety Mike Adams along with placing safety Corey Lynch on IR. Adams was a solid contributor for the Denver Broncos the past two seasons. He is by no means the automatic starter at the safety position, in fact, I still expect Howell to be on the field come week 1. However, Adams provides depth behind two injury prone safeties and competition for an up in the air free safety spot. Yes, Landry was primarily the free safety last year, but strong safety seems to be his more natural position and I hope the Colts are smart enough to move him there in 2014. Adams has experience at both spots, and that will come in handy as Pagano enjoys playing his safeties interchangeably. Even though Howell will most likely be the starter, there is always the possibility that he doesn’t work out. And Adams provides a nice fall back option to have. Reason being that he may not be a big time playmaker, but he shouldn’t hurt the Colts defense either. Between the injury histories of Toler, Landry and Howell it is nice to have some depth at the defensive back position. And Adams is definitely a start.  It doesn’t mean Grigson should be done looking to improve the roster (he never is), but it should put some of us at ease. It is one of many steps to come as we head towards the week 1 matchup versus the Broncos.  The Colts have to be prepared, and have to maximize the talent they have on their roster. Adams was a solid signing for GM Ryan Grigson and the horseshoe, and hopefully it pays dividends on the field. Go Colts!
