The Indianapolis Colts have done a great job bolstering the depth of the wide receiver position this off-season, and they should be in good shape heading into the 2014 NFL season. The problem now becomes, who do they cut at the bottom of the depth chart? LaVon Brazill, Da’Rick Rogers and Griff Whalen all flashed skill and potential in the time they got in 2013 due to injuries. But there is no way for the Colts to keep all three of these guys. With Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton, Hakeem Nicks and Donte Moncrief in front of them. Rogers is definitely going to be on the final 53-man roster, I have no doubt of that. He has number one potential and showed this in small bursts last season. He is an undrafted free agent, so he needs time to develop, but he has, by far, the highest ceiling out of any of these three receivers. That leaves one last spot for either Brazill or Whalen. And I like Whalen to win this matchup. He has outstanding hands, and splendid route running. Not to mention the timing he has with quarterback Andrew Luck is impeccable, mostly due to the time they had in college together. Whalen struggled when he was first called up to the roster from the practice squad, but his second go around was great. He not only showed ability to catch the ball, he did a nice job of getting yards after the catch (mostly in the regular season Kansas City Chiefs game) and returning punts as well. His ability to fill in as a returner may be the difference between him and Brazill. Brazill is an athletic receiver that had some really nice games last season. He has potential to become a pretty nice weapon for the Colts. However, he is one misstep away from being banned for half a season, and as I stated earlier, Whalen has shown the ability to return kicks more than Brazill has. Both these factors could easily be the difference between him making the roster, and him finding a home somewhere else. For these reasons I expect the wide receiver depth to look as follows: Reggie Wayne, T.Y. Hilton, Hakeem Nicks, Donte Moncrief, Da’Rick Rogers and Griff Whalen. Go Colts!
