The injury-riddled Washington Redskins have signed tight end Dominique Byrd and offensive lineman Jonathan Compas. Byrd has played in 15 games since being drafted in 2006. He opened this season with Seattle but was released after the first game. Compas appeared in two games with Tampa Bay in 2009. He spent this year's training camp with New England. The two were signed to take the roster spots vacated when tight end Chris Cooley and running back Tim Hightower were placed on injured reserve. The Redskins have put three offensive players on IR in the last two weeks, and two other offensive players have significant injuries. The Redskins also signed running back Tristan Davis to the practice squad. Guard John Malecki was cut from the practice squad.

At Tight End, Byrd Is The Word

AP Image Don’t you know about the Byrd?  Truthfully, everybody knows that the Byrd is the word. Satisfied with the blockers that the Redskins had on the team, head coach Mike Shanahan sought free agent tight end Dominique Byrd to be a playmaker on offense. “He’s an athlete,” he said yesterday after practice. “We thought he was the best pass catching tight end out there...

Santana Moss could return in three to six weeks

Injured Washington Redskins wide receiver Santana Moss said Wednesday that he could return to the field sooner than the five to seven weeks that Coach Mike Shanahan said he expected. Moss said doctors “gave me anywhere from three to six weeks. You never know. You never know what can happen.” Moss said that he is supposed to have the three pins removed from his broken left hand...

Dominique Byrd happy for opportunity with Redskins, reunion with Fred Davis

They say you never know what you’ve got until it’s gone, and Dominique Byrd can certainly attest to that. One of the newest members of the Washington Redskins, the tight end says although he had a solid career at USC and went on to get selected in the third round of the 2006 draft by St. Louis, he never actually loved or appreciated his skills as a football player or the opportunity...

Next guy up for Seattle: rookie Richard Sherman

The surprise is how rookie Richard Sherman ended up as the Seattle Seahawks' first-team cornerback this week, not necessarily that he will be the starter come Sunday against Cincinnati. First, veteran Marcus Trufant went on injured reserve with a recurring back problem. Then, when Seattle returned from its bye, second-year cornerback Walter Thurmond suffered a broken fibula...

Charlie Whitehurst and QB Play in the Pete Carroll Era

In sports, stats are at their best when they can be averaged over a wide number of games.  That's easy enough to do in baseball, where the pros get a whopping 162 games a year.   NBA and NHL players get the benefit of 82 games a year to show their stuff.  Even Major League Soccer players can count on 34 regular season appearances to average out their stats.  Compared to...

Football still lagging in popularity in Canada

The Washington Redskins' place in the contentious NFC East guarantees them a daunting slate of road games each year. Whether they're being bombarded by ceaseless taunts from Philadelphia's acerbic fan base, overwhelmed by the vastness of Cowboys Stadium or swallowed up by deafening crowd noise in the Meadowlands, the Redskins ...

Where Buffalo Roam

The Washington Redskins will play their seventh game of the 2011 season on the road against the Buffalo Bills, but they won't be playing in Buffalo, they will be playing in Toronto, Canada. The game is part of the NFL's international 'promotion tour', and has been every year sice 2008, when it has become the host of one Bills 'home' game. The contract was...
