In my recent San Diego Chargers 7 round mock draft I had the Chargers selecting a small school WR from South Dakota State University, Dale Moss. Moss, a former basketball player, only played 1 year of football for SDSU but made a big impact. The 6’3″ 213lb WR pulled in 61 receptions for a team high 949 yards and 6 touchdowns.

He has recently been skyrocketing up draft boards, from possibly undrafted status to a very draftable grade, due to his eye popping numbers at his pro day. Moss had a 41.5″ vertical which would have been good for 2nd best of any player at the combine, a 4.45 40 yard dash, a 6.32 3-cone drill which would have been a combine record, and a more than acceptable 10’10″ broad jump. This set of numbers puts him among the most athletic receiver’s entering the draft.

During my phone call with Dale, a few things stood out to me. He is very well spoken and articulate. He is confident in his game, yet hungry for more. Possibly the most impressive to me however, is how calm he appears and how well he is handling all this pressure. Going from being a small school prospect, with only 1 season of football, to possibly being drafted as high as the 5th round, Dale Moss is one of the most intriguing prospects in this draft.

Now on to the interview.

-Who or what made you want to switch from basketball and play some football?

“My eligibility was up for basketball and I had one year left that couldn’t be basketball, plus I always wanted to do it. I missed football and this last year of eligibility was a perfect opportunity.”

-What was the hardest part of the switch? what was the easiest?

“Learning everything from scratch again was hard. I played in highschool but it was a much different system from what we played in College. I put in a lot of work over the summer running routes, catching balls, and studying the playbook.”

“I feel like catching the ball and being in traffic is very natural to me. I like going up to make plays on the ball.”

-You obviously have all the physical tools based on your numbers from your pro day, what have you been doing to “catch up” with guys that have been playing WR all through college?

“I’ve been doing lots of film work on myself, critiquing what I did over the season and identifying what I need to work on. Also looking at other defenses especially NFL defenses to see how they work. I’ve also been talking to a lot of coaches for hints and tips any time I can.”

-The Chargers have a very successful college basketball player catching passes for them in Antonio Gates, was he any sort of inspiration in making the switch? How would you feel about being his team mate and being able to learn from him?

*laughs* “I think that would be a pretty unique situation and connection that would be amazing. He would be a great mentor and it would be an honor just to be on the same team with a guy that’s been as great as he is.”

-How does it feel going from playing Basketball at a smaller school like South Dakota State, then between your great season of football and your pro-day being talked about as a possible 5th round pick?

“It feels great to get the recognition, but I cant wait to prove I am worth being drafted. I want to be productive for years to come and I wouldn’t be satisfied with just being a guy who gets picked and spends a few years in the league. I want to work hard and make a lasting impact on the game.”

-Some people are suggesting you may need to add 10 or 20 lbs, how would you feel about that? and how would it affect what you do?

“I love working out and wouldn’t mind adding weight. I weighed in at 213 at my pro day but I am already up to 218. My goal is to be at 225 for training camp and would feel comfortable going all the way up to 230, I don’t feel like that would take away from my athleticism and I honestly think it would make me even more explosive.”

-Which teams have shown interest or met with you so far?

“A few teams have talked to my agents already, you know how teams are with not wanting to reveal too much too close to draft time but I will say I have a few visits set up and my agent has been getting calls.”
