Eagles QB, Mike Kafka
Nick Foles Fever has officially swept the city of Philadelphia. The noise on sports talk radio has turned from contentions that Foles should be Mike Vick’s backup to assertions by some that he should be the starter. While the Eagles are left to deal with a potential QB controversy in the making, the other two candidates for the third and final QB roster spot have flown under the radar a bit.
Mike Kafka was anointed Vick’s backup in the offseason. At the time, it seemed like a reasonable option. After the departure of Vince Young, Kafka was the only QB besides Vick on the roster that knew and understood the Eagles offense. Eventually the team added veteran Trent Edwards to the mix, but still stood by Kafka. Then they drafted Foles.
When Mike Kafka broke his non-throwing hand in the first preseason game against the Steelers, it clearly opened the door for Nick Foles. It may have opened the door for Trent Edwards too.
The precarious nature of carrying a rookie as your primary backup to your starting QB may lead the Eagles to give Trent Edwards the final spot on the roster.
Hypothetically, if Michael Vick does get hurt again in this regular season and misses any significant time, the team will need a veteran presence. I’m not suggesting that Trent Edwards would be the guy to help this team win, but he could buy the Eagles some extra time to get Nick Foles up to speed. Mike Kafka has not shown the Eagles that he can step up and be the guy in the NFL. Having Kafka as the backup and having to rely on him if Vick goes down isn’t much different than having Foles in that same spot. If that’s the case, why not just go with Foles?
Mike Kafka may know the offense a little bit better because he’s worked in it for three years now, but again, he hasn’t proven that he can execute at the NFL level. Nick Foles, at least, has proven he can compete in the preseason NFL. I’m not hitching my wagon to him yet, but he has demonstrated a lot of promise.
If Nick Foles does wind up being the backup for this Eagles team, I don’t see the team hanging on to Mike Kafka. Trent Edwards would provide the veteran presence that the team would need. Edwards has done a decent job. He’s by no means a starter in the league, but he could be valuable to the team. While Edwards had only limited success as the Buffalo Bills QB, he did play in the NFL and knows what he’s in for.
Mike Kafka’s fractured hand might leave him the odd man out.
