While ESPN and New York media spent Monday trying to figure out what it means now that Fireman Ed is hanging up his Jets cheer duties, we were on the hunt for the NFL’s next great superfan. As on the football field, a man goes down, somebody steps into his place and becomes a hero. Enter Cleveland Browns superfan, Pumpkinhead. We first became aware of Pumpkinhead this week via tailgating photos where an effigy of Ben Roethlisberger was hanging from a noose and being lit on fire by this Browns superfan. It seems that Pumpkinhead is the leader of an organization called Pumpkin Patch Browns Backers, which seems to be a group of fans who like to drink beer, burn things and chomp on pig heads. Seriously, see below. Pumpkinhead actually has a name. He’s 36-year-old Gus Angelone, a Parma, Ohio resident who drives a fork lift at General Motors and has a cute wife and two boys. On gamedays he becomes Pumpkinhead. Get To Know Pumpkinhead • Favorite quote: “There’s always next year! Here we go Brownie’s, here we go!” • Openly admits family comes before the Browns • Has front-row seats, his own Pumpkin bus & a line of t-shirts • Has special kind of hate for Pittsburgh, Cincinnati & Baltimore • ‘Likes’ the Black Eyed Peas • Counts Josh Cribbs as one of his biggest supporters Angelone told Yahoo! in November that he was craving some positive attention in his life when the pumpkinhead came to him. “In 2002, I believe the Browns made a minor uniform adjustment. They changed the color of the facemask from white to gray and also the color of the helmet to pumpkin orange. So that gave me an idea. Around Halloween of that year, I carved a real pumpkin and wore it to the Browns game. I received so much attention and had so much fun, I wanted to wear a pumpkin every game. Unfortunately, after Thanksgiving, pumpkins are out of season and you can’t get them anymore. So the next season, I went to the craft store and bought a replica pumpkin and have been wearing the one you see ever since,” he explained. And an NFL superfan was born.
